20 Questions

Check out all the old 20 Question Interviews here. I interviewed some of the people in the Louisville music scene. These were done around Nov. 2003 until May of 2004.

Leave me a comment below.

Courtenay Pennick Interview from 2003

This is the 2nd 20 Questions Interview I am doing. Dave Wathen was the first, and I think I was too easy on him. This one is with Courtenay. Also, known as MissInf0rmati0n. She is the Factor 9 board moderator and deletes the really negative and worthless posts. She is 29 yrs old, lives in NY and plays guitar. That's about all I know about her, so I should be able to think of plenty of questions.

1. What have you been up to lately Courtenay ? Anything you want to promote or anything exciting going on with you in NY ?

I've been working my ass off at work and auditioning for bass gigs throughout NYC. I've started an industrial project called Standpipe with a guy in Brooklyn.

2. I figure you are from the Louisville area, or have some ties here. Where did you grow up, go to high school, college etc. ?

Born in Louisville, grew up in Lexington, and graduated from Bryan Station in '92. Moved to New York exactly one year ago.

3. You play guitar and own at least a couple of nice guitars. What is the run-down on some of the guitars, amps, and other music equipment that you are proud to own ?

PRS Custom 24 Ten Top (Whale blue)
Ibanez S Series (barewood)
Curbow 5 string bass
Rocktron Velocity 120 power amp
Rocktron Gainiac tube preamp
RANE 27 band EQ
Randall 4x12 cab
Peavey 2x12 Sheffield cab (thanks Bill)
Mesa Boogie 4x10 cab
I'm currently looking for a bass head.
I have a ton of other stuff, but none worth mentioning.

4. Do you write songs ? I never see you pushing mp3s or a website, so I assume you aren't in a band or recording anything on your own. What are your musical aspirations ?

I write some, but not as much as I'd like. I have a new project, but not a full band, yet. I don't care to be famous, I just want to play.

5. What one person on the Factor 9 Board annoys you the most and why ?

It's usually Dylan as far as people who have balls to leave their name. Mostly because he has a shitty comment for everything. But no one sucks dick harder than the guest posters.

6. I will name some female musicians and you rate them from 1 to 10 with 1 the lowest and 10 the highest. Base your answer on how talented, influential and how sexy they are...
1.) Jewel - 7
2.) Vanessa Carlton - who?
3.) Liz Phair - 4
4.) Paz Lenchantin - 9
5.) D'arcy Wretzky - 6

8.) Ani Difranco - 6
9.) Alanis Morissette - 7

8. If you could spend one whole day with anyone person, doing all the things you love to do, who would it be and what would you do ?

Stevie Ray Vaughan, and we would just talk philosophy.

9. Ok, here is the long scenario question. You are discovered at a music store looking at guitars and a video director asks you if you would want to be in a video. He is shooting a new video for Christina Aguilera and wants a female guitarist to "play sync" the lead guitar part and be in a few scenes as Christina's "Rock Band". You learn the lead, do a short audition the next day, and get the gig. You find out the pay is 350 bucks for a day-long shoot. You go to a studio to shoot the video and they shoot you up close doing the lead. You do it perfect. They then decide that they want you in another scene that will be spliced in and you will be doing a scene with Christina where you must make-out with her. You will have to kiss her several times while they get different shots of it. The pay stays the same, 350 bucks, however, the director tells you that if you do it, you can have the guitar that they gave you to use in the video. Its a Zakk Wilde Custom Les Paul worth nearly 4 grand. It has the bulls-eye paint job in lipstick red and the base color is a piano white. You have to decide quick, the shoot must rap that same day. Would you do it ?

HELL NO

10. Same scenario, but its Pink's new video. Yay or Nay ?
HELL NAY

Teague Ridge Interview from 2004

Teague Ridge, well-known for being the bass player for the band Breckinridge, producing demos for East 146, also known for looking like Scott Ian of Anthrax, well, Teague was cool enough to take time to answer 20 Questions, so here they are !

1. What is going on with Breckinridge these days ?

Well we just got home from showcasing for John Kalodner and Sanctuary records. Plus we have some other good things going well for us. I think 2004 will be a kick ass year for Breckinridge. It’s time to start building the story.

2. What's it like to be in a band with Rahul Borkar ?

Inspiring, Intriguing and at times very entertaining. See Rahul is one of my best friends but at the same time I’m a fan of his. Some of the guitar parts he writes are pure genius. I also find myself watching him while we are on stage. He is such a great performer it’s hard not to. Rahul is also one of the funniest guys you will ever meet. I have stories of Rahul I will never forget. All in all it’s really an honor to be in a band with Rahul. He has definitely made me a better musician.

3. What kind of gear do you own and what is your live set-up ?

I am Ampeg through and through. I play an svt classic head with 2 4x 10’s with horns. I like more of a punchy sound. That’s why I want all of my cabs to have horns. I have played the 8x10’s and its just not the same as having a horn for every 4 speakers. I play Modulus basses and wouldn’t play anything else. The graphite necks give the guitars an outstanding tone.

4. What bass players have most inspired you ?

The reason I started playing bass was Frank Green of Outspoken. I saw Frank play with what ever will at the Hooters bikini contest in 96 or 97. I started on guitar when I was little and had done the whole lesson thing for about 6 years but when I saw the way Frank took over songs with a bass line I knew that was my calling.

5. What was your first concert and what was your favorite concert ?

The first concert I ever went to was Nirvana and Sonic Youth in London England. I was playing in the Junior World Invitational Golf Tournament later that week in Scotland and we stopped in England to sight see. While touring the town I saw a sign on a club that Nirvana was playing there. So after hours of begging my Dad took me to the concert. It was an amazing experience that’s also the time when I decided I wanted to be in a band. That would also have to be my favorite concert ever.

6. What is the most unusual thing that has happened to you right before, right after or during a show ?

Well the craziest feeling I have ever had at a show was when we played the Kentucky State Fair at the Bud Tent. The place was insanely packed and the crowd had been amazing all night. During the bridge of “honesty” we all stopped playing (Which wasn’t planned at all) and the entire crowd was singing our song while we stood there in astonishment. That has to be the most amazing feeling ever. It’s a rush that wont ever be re-created. I don’t care if we are playing arenas and sell 20 million records it will never top the feeling of that night.

7. What are your five favorite CDs ?

The Used. The new Linkin Park, Pearl Jam 10, Nirvana Nevermind, Red Hot Chilli Peppers One Hot Minute.

8. What local band deserves the most success and why ?

That’s a tough one. In terms of hard work or Talent? Talent wise Outspoken deserves a ton more credit. All of the bands in this city except for a few deserve success. Its hard to narrow that down.

9. What national act would you most like to play bass with for one tour ?

Well for the record there is not a band in the world I would rather be in than the one I am in. I have so much fun on stage with Breckinridge. But bands like The Eagles, and RHCP would be fun.

10. I will list some bands and you rate them from 1-10. 10 being the best, 1 being the worst.

1.) Breckinridge - 9 but we can become a ten with some hard work.

2.) End of Me - 7 great songs.

3.) MSD - 6 great gimmic.

4.) Outspoken - 8 Could so easily be a 10 though.

5.) Tantric - 7 pre Kevin 9 post Kevin.

6.) East 146 - 7 but there so talented and so motivated the will be a 10 one day.

7.) MOV - 7 great group of guys.

8.) Tool - 10 I guess I cant deny their talent.

9.) Good Charlotte - 4 To me their pretty fake.

10.) Tornacade - Well since their not band anymore do I have to rate them.

11.) Black Sabbath - 10 It’s Ozzy and one of the best guitar players ever.

12.) Anthrax - 8 but They are really not my style.

11. I will list some people and you give your thoughts...

1.) Chris Volz- Amazing musician. I hear he can get a little violent though.

2.) Rahul Borkar- Indian Pimp.

3.) Scott McKenzie- Smelly, as well as the best rock drummer in Louisville.

4.) Jessica (Tornacade)- Amazing Talent.

5.) Frank Green- Like I said before my inspiration to start playing bass.

6.) Susan Weber- An amazing lady who will work her ass off for a band. She has been great to me.

7.) Scott Fraizer- Well no one can dispute his drive.

8.) Travis Meeks- The best musician in this town. He has always been cool as hell to me.

9.) Malcom Springer- There will be a day when Malcolm is called one of the best producers of our time.

10.) Chris Stahl- Awesome singer, Awesome guitar player, Great song writer. I think Chris will do big things in music.

12. What is the most money you have made for a single performance since being a part of Breckinridge ?

Not sure really. I know we have been paid really well in the past. I kinda feel like if you’re a band that can put people through the door you deserve to make money.

13. You dated Jessica from Tornacade for a while, what happened between you two and are you in a serious relationship with anyone right now ?

Even though she doesn’t have the nicest things to say about me It’s not my style to take my personal life public. I will say I am in a serious relationship now with a kick ass girl. Life is good!

14. Last of Teague Ridge...

1.) Last good concert you have seen - Fuel at Jillians rocked.

2.) Last good movie you have seen - Pirates of the Caribbean.

3.) Last good CD you have listened to - The new Linkin Park.

4.) Last time you saw Jessica naked - Not sure.

5.) Last time you shaved your head - This morning.

6.) Last time you have been to a strip club - It’s been awhile.

15. Who has had the biggest influence on you as a person ?

My Father. He is a great person and I could only wish to be as kind hearted and down to earth as he is.

16. I will list some singers and you rate them on a singers and you rate them on a scale of 1-10. 10 being awesome, 1 being pathetic.

1.) Scott Stapp - 7

2.) Chris Volz - 8

3.) Chuck Willis - 7 on singing ability 10.5 on being a front man.

4.) Steve Perry - 7 not his gig.

5.) Bukshot - 8 on rapping ability 10.5 on the whole package.

6.) Travis Meeks - 10 like him or not he is good.

7.) John Bush (Anthrax) - 7

8.) Peter Cetera - 8

9.) Phil Anselmo - 8

10.) Joey Belladonna (Anthrax) - 7

11.) David "E" Fraizer - 9 on singing 4 on being a front man.

12.) Maynard (Tool) - 10 does anything he sings sound bad?

17. What is your favorite Breckinridge song ?

A song called “Take Me” when we play it on stage we erupt. Also a song called “Within” because of the lyrics. We touch on the God issue with an interesting view.

18. What would be the best thing you could receive for Christmas this year ?

News that the music business was going to get back on its feet and that people had to buy records again.

19. What local band is over-rated, what band is under-rated ?

Well to say a band is over-rated they would have to get credit and not many bands get that. We are all under-rated.

20. Let's say you get signed to a major label. You are in the studio and the producer suggest that you record one cover song. He thinks it's a good idea to remake an 80s love song. He ask all the band members to choose an 80s love song to remake. What song would you choose ?

The song from Top Gun. I love that song.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's recap...Teague saw Nirvana in concert in London England.

He didn't have anything bad to say about his ex-girlfriend Jessica.

He also had lots of good things to say about other people in the 502 scene.

Thanks Teague !

Rahul Borkar Interview from 2004

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I thought Rahul could give some us some answers about the infamous Breckinridge contract rider, plus give us a little information about where his family is from.

1. Where is your family from, where did you grow up, and where did you go to high school ?

My parents are both from India, but my sister and I were both born here in Louisville. My dad is a doctor. He started a practice in Louisville, but we ended up moving a few times when I was really young. We moved back to Louisville when I was 6 and never moved again. I went to high school at St. Xavier. I loved and hated it while I was there, but now that I’m out, I miss it. It’s funny because Teague and Chuck both went there, but I wasn’t really friends with them then. Teague, Chuck, and I hooked up in college.

2. How long have you been in Breckinridge and how did you joining come about ? Also, the spelling is Breckinridge, not Breckenridge, right ? Will people ever learn the correct spelling ?

I think it’s been about three years since I’ve been in Breckinridge. I had started a project where I was singing and playing guitar. I wanted to record, so I hooked up with Teague’s studio. We didn’t have a bassist at the time, and Teague liked our stuff, so he started playing bass with us. It was pretty cool because we started practicing over there. He was just filling in because he was serious about his band, “Element H”. One day Teague called and was like, “Hey, Chuck and I are over here, you wanna jam?” I kind of knew from the phone call that they wanted me to come over and see how I liked playing with them. Well, we started jamming, and it was awesome. The band I had been playing with at the time was just so disorganized, and these guys had there shit together. So from that night on, I was in. But yeah, it is spelled Breckinridge. Who knows how long it will take for people to realize that. It’s our fault though, we picked a name with two different spellings in Louisville.

3. What bands were you in before Breckenridge ?

I started off playing drums in “Valence” then guitar in a band called “The Dying Race”. Then I played drums with my boy John Ising (Sara Tonen) in a band called “The Tribe”. I got kind of tired of being behind the drum set, so I started a solo project. I recorded 5 songs, and did all the tracks. I got together with some friends and formed the band Seven Ten Split. It was a hardcore band and I was singing. This was during the Spark’s days back in ’97. So yeah, now I’m in Breckinridge….

4. What inspired you to play guitar and who are your influences ?

I actually started off wanting to buy a drum set but my parents weren’t quite ready for that yet. So they got me a guitar. My biggest influences were probably my friends, because they are the one’s who really told me how to play. As far as bands goes, Nirvana and Pearl Jam were big influences when I started to play.

5. Are you into collecting guitars. How many do you own and what are they ? Also, give us a run-down of your live set-up, amps and effects, etc.

Wow, I wish I could afford to collect guitars. I actually only have two guitars that I own. I have a Fernandez that I don’t play, but won’t sell. I also have an Gibson SG standard that I play. My other main guitar belongs to Teague. It’s a Les Paul. He is soooo extremely nice to let me play it, because I have done some serious damage to it. I was doing my guitar spin one show, and the strap came off. The guitar almost went through Scott’s drums. So yeah, props to Teague. I also don’t own my own amp. My best friend (Brad Compton from Sex Tractor) gave me his Mesa head and cabinet before he moved to Berkley to be a scientist. I don’t like to have pedals. I have enough problems with a footswitch to be worrying about chords and pedals and shit.

6. There are lots of rumors that you have pro representation now, and are on the verge of signing a deal with a major label. What do you guys in Breckinridge have going on ?

Yeah, rumors are fun. It’s always fun to read something about what is going on with your band on a message board. But yeah, we don’t have a record deal right now, but we are kind of close. That is a broad statement though, cause anyone that has done this, knows it takes an extremely long time no matter how close you think you are. If you think you are two weeks away from something huge, you can pretty much say you are two months away. As far as representation goes, we have kind of played our cards differently then others usually do. We started off with a producer (Malcolm Springer), and he took us under his wing. We went to a real deal studio, and cut a good demo. Then instead of going to labels, we got our lawyer (Jim Zumwalt). This guy is a badass, plus he handles Kurt Cobain’s estate, as well as Creed, Sevendust, and a bunch of others. So he is the one basically doing the label stuff for us, not a manager. We have a pretty big showcase coming up on November 20th. So for now, we are just keeping our fingers crossed.

7. Someone posted something that was suppose to be Breckinridge's "contract tour rider" on the Factor 9 board. Is that a contract that you have ever used and if so, how much of it was fulfilled ?

Well, the specific content of that rider is something that was made for future shows where we could actually demand silly stuff. A lot of stuff in there was kind of a joke. The point of the rider was to avoid any confusion with a venue during and after the show. Everyone that has done a show knows that shit can get out of hand, and the purpose of the rider was to avoid a lot of it. But yeah, if we get some beers, enough money to pay for production and sound guy, and play at the time we were told we would play, then we are happy. That’s really all that it is for. We don’t demand any of the other stuff.

8. Word Association, I will list some people and you say what first comes to mind.

1.) Scott Mckenzie – a guy that is as short as me

2.) Frank Green – someone that bit me twice on the forehead at the Saliva show.

3.) Bryan Fox – good songwriter

4.) Teague Ridge – great heart

5.) Jessica (from Tornacade) – times we could get pissed off at Teague

9.) Travis Meeks - young

9. Who has had the biggest influence on you as a person ?

My parents and the musicians I grew up with.

10. What are your favorites ?

1.) Favorite food – Jalapeño Poppers (cheddar, not cream cheese)

2.) Favorite movie – Every Superman, every Rocky, and Notting Hill. When I get drunk and crash at Chuck’s, I always watch Notting Hill. I’m a dork.

3.) Favorite book – The Catcher and the Rye

4.) Favorite guitar – Gibson Les Paul Custom

5.) Favorite actor – don’t really have one

6.) Favorite band – Um, wow. That’s tough. I don’t really have one. Growing up I was a huge Snapcase and Refused fan. A lot of old Louisville bands are stuff I still listen to like Falling Forward and Endpoint. As far as new stuff goes, I’m a pretty big fan of Thursday. Radiohead will always be up there also.

7.) Favorite cd – Refused’s first album. I think it’s called rather be dead.

8.) Favorite local band – Right now I am going to have to say that East 146 are pretty kick ass.

11. Besides Breckinridge, what local band or person deserves the most success and why ?

Kevin from Outspoken. It’s ridiculous how talented he is. Definitely Kevin from Outspoken. He is an amazing person with amazing talent. He is one of the best guitarists I've ever seen. Bukshot is another. He works his ass off.

12. You are chosen to be on a new reality show. You will spend 60 days at a ski resort in the Colorado mountains. I will list some people that want to go. The pay is 2 grand a week, you get a 10 grand bonus if you stay the full 60 days. Pick who can go with you.

1.) Teague Ridge - Definitely. He's really a hard worker.

2.) Scott McKenzie - Would love some Scott. He's a lot of fun when he doesn't have to drive, so we would party a lot.

3.) Bukshot - Buk would be my bodyguard. He's a big fella. Does he have to ski????

4.) Kris 502 - Um, you said sixty days???? Is she turning 18 anytime during that period?

5.) Frank Green - Nope, he would bite me on the forehead all the time.

6.) Jessica (from Tornacade) - No, cause she wouldn't leave Teague alone. LOL

7.) Vanilla Ice - He could sing me to sleep at night.

8.) Rachel Enriquez -???

9.) Chris Stahl - We would play guitar a lot

10.) Michael J. Jingalo - ????

12. In the last year has Rahul Borkar...

1.) Bought a guitar - Yup, a Gibson SG

2.) Tried to get an endorsement - Got the Budweiser sponsorship

3.) Looked at Teague Ridge's girlfriend's ass for more than 5 seconds without stopping - Indeed I have

4.) Taken flying lessons and told the instructor to "not worry so much about the landing part" - That's funny as shit, but no.

5.) Bought a rap cd - got me some eminem

13. Last of Rahul Borkar...

1.) Last CD you bought - wow, I haven't bought a CD in a really long time. I think the last CD I paid for was Outspoken. Damn, I feel badly now. I gotta go buy some more shit. My boys in Christiansen just came out with a CD, so i'm gonna pick that up this week.

2.) Last really good movie you have seen - Um, I saw that movie with Jamie Kennedy in it where he is a rapper from Cali. That movie was funny as shit. Oh, it's Malibu's Most Wanted I think. Good times.

3.) Last good book you have read - Damn, I need to start reading books more often. I think I'm going to read The House of Dies Drear again.

4.) Last girl you wanted to ask out but haven't - wow, every girl in a bar when I'm wasted.

5.) Last good concert you have seen - The Thursday show at Tekworld was fun. We just played a show with Peter Searcy, Common Ground, Danny Flanigan (sp?) and a bunch of others. That was a lot of fun.

14. Did you hear the rumor that Susan Weber told the guys in the band "End of Me" that she would manage them if Bryan Fox would get plastic surgery on his face, and if so, is it true ?

Bryan is a sexy man. Didn't you see him singing for Three Doors Down??? lol

15. What national act would you like to go on tour with ?

Deftones would be fun. Sevendust would be a great tour also. I just wanna go on a national tour. Playing with a good band is just a bonus.

16. What good advice can you give to younger guys who are just getting a start in the music business ?

Wow. I guess just just always remember why you started playing. Everyone starts off for fun, and sometimes it gets serious. Just don't let the business side of it take control over why you play. Stuff can get pretty stressful, so you just gotta have fun. The most important thing is to ignore the haters. The bigger you get, the more fans you get. But with more fans you also get more haters. It's hard to look the other way sometimes, but that's what you gotta do.

17. Who has had the biggest influence on you as a person ?

My parents for sure. they are really good to me. Everyone who I have ever played in a band with has had an amazing impact on who I am.

18. Who would you most like to spend an entire day with and what would you do ?

I think as far as a modern person goes, it would be Eminem. I really think he's awesome. I think we would be in the studio and just write. Oh nevermind, I think it would be Brittany Spears. I think you know what we would be doing all day. Good times....

19. Who is the weirdest person that you have met in the 502 scene ?

Um, I haven't met anyone who I thought was weird. BJ is a character for sure though. He was pretty awesome on stage. He wore a skirt when I played with him one time.

20. Well, we are about done, anyone you want to give a shout-out to ?

Just want to say thanks to everyone that has supported us the past couple of years. It really means a lot. Oh, and maybe a big Fuck You to all the haters in the scene that love to talk shit about us.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's recap...

Rahul was born in Louisville. His parents are from India.

He has been bitten on the forehead one too many times by Frank Green.

Said that BJ Abner wore a skirt one time when he played with him.

I thought Bryan Fox would be a good person to start with for the New Year, so I asked him if he would do 20 Questions and he said he'd love to...so here is Bryan Fox !

What is going on with Bryan Fox and "End Of Me"?

We currently have been in somewhat of a transition mode trying to work in our new bassist Shaun Kennedy. Things are still cool for us, we are looking at a couple of different opportunities that have presented themselves to us at the moment. I wish I could discuss them further, but we all have kind of been taught that nothing in the music business is done until you have signed the contract and cashed your first check. We were just featured on the cover of Louisville Music News to promote our first true record as a band, which we are very excited about. We took all of the best recordings and put only those songs on the album. As far as what is going on with me personally, my wife and I are expecting our first child in March (a girl!), and I am working to try and transition myself and my patients into a different work environment. Being a great father has always been the biggest goal for my life, so I am excited to get started on making that goal a reality.

2. The band was originally called The Bryan Fox Band, why did you change the band name to End Of Me ?

The Bryan Fox Band" came out of a time when I had no band, just a group of friends that helped me out in the studio. When "Yes" was first played on the Fox's local show, I told them that it was a band called End of Me, even though it was just me and quickly called them back after the first show to change it to "The Bryan Fox Band." When the band lineup finally came together, Ryan and Danny were such an essential part of writing and arrangement that I didn't feel like that was fair to them to have a band named after me. We thought and thought about what band name would work for us and eventually came back to the name "End of Me"

3. How long have you been playing, singing, and writing songs?

I started out on bass at 13, and switched to guitar when I was 15, because I wasn't in a band and needed something that I could write more on. I never could sing very well, but I tried my hardest and it eventually developed into something people could stand listening to. Some people may argue with that still I guess…. I always wrote songs even from the very beginning, to me that is the whole point in learning an instrument. I would hate to know that I would have to live my life without that outlet.

4. Were you in any bands prior to The Bryan Fox Band and End Of Me?

I released my first CD at Murray State University when I went to school there. It is very acoustic based, and a very different style than what I play with End of Me. It contained some good songs, but my ignorance at the time about studio production really shows. We had about four to five channels on the whole record. Vocals, bass, drums, and acoustic. Malcolm uses around 110 on some of his productions.

5. Who first inspired you to play music and write songs?

My band teacher Keith Vincent was an amazing country singer/songwriter and especially a guitarist. He would always entertain us on band trips. I would just watch in amazement and just wish I could do that too. I played trumpet in the band and even though I was technically very good at it, I couldn't express myself at all. Guitar became a natural outlet.

6. Do you have any endorsements, and what guitars and amps do you play?

I had a Takamine endorsement at one time, but never took advantage of it very much. I play an orange dual channel combo for small gigs, and I A/B a fender twin and a 80's Marshall JCM 800 when I can fit it on stage. As far as guitars go, I usually play a Godin Flat Five X, which is a dual channeled Gibson 335 looking electric with an acoustic channel, which I play simultaneously through the PA. I am a pain in the ass to run sound for because they usually have to devote three channels for my guitar alone, but the effect of it when it works is great for our music. I also play a Larivee' Jumbo acoustic that I play on certain songs live. At home I have various other guitars that I collect and write on. My baby is a 1943 Gibson J-45 with the banner headstock. I love vintage instruments and gear.

7. You are chosen to be on a new reality show. You will be on a deserted island for 90 days. You are getting paid a thousand dollars for each day you are there. I will list some people that also will be on the island. They are also getting a grand a day, but you get to choose how long they stay. 1 day, 30 days, or the full 90 days. I will list the people and you decide how long you want them on the island with you.

1.) Travis Meeks - Absolutely 1 day. Travis has always been wonderful to me, and an absolutely amazing musician, but he is definitely not an easy person to get along with.

2.) Ryan Murphy - I would keep him around for awhile since it looks like from this list we are going to need a drummer. Plus, if he made $90,000, I would get to collect on all those unpaid dental bills and he wouldn‘t ask me all the time to buy him a beer!

3.) Gwen Stefani - Come on, is this even worth answering? 90 days.

4.) Emerson Hart - I really love his stuff, but I may need him off ASAP to keep my ego going…1 day.

8.) Hugo Ferreira - 30 days. I can’t say enough great things about Hugo, but he wouldn’t be any fun on the island because he would be macking on Gwen the whole time.

9.) Kevin McCreery - I love Kevin, but don’t know if my stomach could take all of the laughing… I’d have to give him 90 days anyways.

10.) Kimmet - Kimmy is great, she could stick around as long as she wanted.

11.) Susan Weber - Since Ryan is going to be there I better keep it at 1 day.

12.) Frank Green - The only bassist on the list, and he would round off the perfect rhythm section… 90 days.

8. If you could choose any songwriter to collaborate with on a full length cd, who would it be ?

I would say Paul McCartney would be pretty amazing to collaborate with considering the impact of the Beatles on Rock, but I think my heart would go with Eddie Vedder, he has probably influenced my love for rock more than any other.

9. Who has had the biggest influence on you as a person ?

My parents are without a doubt the greatest influence on my life. They are pretty amazing people who have dedicated everything to their children. I hope I am as good a dad as mine was. My wife is an amazing person also, but I think that I was already who I am before I met her… But she definitely makes me want to be a better person everyday.

10. There was a message posted on the Factor 9 message board (factor9.net) offering Donnie Hardin free or "at cost" dental care. It was under a guest post, but you usually post as a guest, so I was hoping it was a for real thing, plus I had a filling come out of a tooth and I don't have any dental insurance right now. So, was this a legit offer and if so, what has come of it ?

It was a totally legit offer. I know dental work is expensive, especially for young musicians or musicians in general. I remember in college how much 10 dollars seemed, much less $1000 for one crown. Sometimes I have holes in my schedule and I don't mind doing free or discounted work to those who appreciate it. Obviously I can't extend that offer to everybody, but Donnie's problem is something I could literally fix in 10 minutes, so why the hell not? I put the ball in his court, and he never has called and make an appointment. Unfortunately my job situation has changed since then, and I can't do free work now. That's one of the reasons I am trying to leave.

11. There was another rumor that Susan Weber offered to manage End Of Me, but under the stipulation that you get some sort of plastic surgery, is there any truth to that, and if so, did she offer to pay for it ?

Are you sure you didn’t make that up? The only place I have ever seen this rumor is in the 20 questions. Susan has always been really nice to me personally, but Ryan Murphy would rather quit the band than to have anything to do with her on a business level. I wish that rumor were true, I could use a little nip and tuck. We could always get Terry Harper to play drums…

12. What are your five favorite CDs?

Beatles- Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

I think there will never be anyone even close to being as great as the Beatles…

Pearl Jam- Ten

Tears come to my eyes thinking of how amazing “Black” was being performed by them on MTV unplugged…

U2- Joshua Tree

just mentioning it makes me want to crank up “Bullet the Blue Sky”

Beastie Boys- License to Ill

that album is just so fly…

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Blood Sugar Sex Magik

I just remember back when I first heard that album, it just seemed like the most perfect thing I had ever listened to… John Frusciante became my favorite guitarist after that, even though I am not very impressed by their latest effort.

13. What are your five favorite movies ?
True Romance- a truly violent love story, absolutely everyone is in it. Quentin Tarrantino's greatest flick.

Shawshank Redemption- for once a movie based on a Stephen King book that was good.

Pulp Fiction- Quentin Tarrantino is amazing. I remember watching that movie on opening night. I looked over to my friend about halfway through and said “ I don’t have a clue what this movie is about but I love it!”

Clerks- I have quoted that movie more than any other. It is just so wrong…

Happy Gilmore- I still laugh so hard after seeing it 100 times at least.

I would probably have included the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but after reading the book the movies seem like such an outline of the book. Anyone who doesn’t read them is really missing out on one of the greatest stories ever written… and a different ending than the movies…

14. What band would you most like to share a tour with ?

Pearl Jam. As a kid Eddie Vedder was just such an influence for me writing and singing.
I was definitely not born with a good singing voice, I learned from singers like
Eddie Vedder and Bob Dylan that tone is not as important as feeling. SO, I
used to have confidence singing because I knew that if I just sang with my
heart that people would overlook the fact that I wasn't a great vocalist.
Tone developed from there…

15. What one person in the 502 scene deserves the most success and why ?

Without a doubt Ryan Murphy. Besides being an amazing drummer, he
contributes to every part of the songs. Plus, he was just born to rock- just
look at him while he plays. He has a rock star attitude and a head for
business. He has been at it for a long time and still wants it more than any
other person I know. There has been times when we thought that we were
absolutely getting a record deal and my wife and I were like "I am just so
happy for Ryan." Hopefully it will be with End of Me with his deserved
success, but if not, I still would be so happy for him.

16. I will list some people and you give your thoughts...

1.) Ryan Murphy - great person, amazing musician. I am humbled to be in a band with him.

2.) Scott Fraizer - easily the most positive person I have ever met, I wish him all the success in the world.

3.) Donnie Highland - He is a wonderful drummer as well. He actually played on "Higher Things." I haven't talked to him in a while, I hope he is happy.

4.) Travis Meeks - absolutely an unbelievable musician. Hopefully someday he will be able to accept his demons and figure out how to be a happy person despite of them.

5.) Hugo Ferreira - He defined End of Me's sound by producing the first version of "Yes." I owe a lot to him. He is a great guy, and a total rock star.

6.) Scott Stapp - He writes great lyrics and has made a career in Rock. Anything bad to say about that would just be out of jealousy for his status. Good for him.

7.) Susan Weber - Always been nice to me and always willing to help anyone out.

8.) Kevin McCreery - Great dude, hellified guitarist.

9.) Malcolm Springer- He is a really great friend, I am glad that he is on his feet again. He is a great rock producer and is filled with songs and ideas.

10.) Kimmet - Kimmet has an amazing voice. I don't think I have ever heard her sound bad, and I have seen them a hundred times.

11.) Doug - I know that if I practiced 8 hours a day for the rest of my life I will never be able to do on the acoustic what he can do.

12.) Shaun Kennedy - He is a great person. If I didn't like him, he wouldn't be our new bassist.

13.) Scott Kennedy - Those Kennedy's are just great people. Scott has always been so nice to me.

14.) Brian Vinson - Brian is one of my best friends. I always thought that the people who saw him play with End of Me only really missed out on how wonderful of a bassist he is. Brian is a jazz upright bassist. That is where he shines the brightest.

17. You mention that you and your wife are expecting a baby girl. Have you chosen a name yet ? If someone offered to start a college fund for her with a 100 grand deposit if you named her Ryanah Murphy Fox, would you do it ? What about Francis Green Fox ?

Definitely. I would have to go with Ryanah Murphy Fox. My wife’s name is Ryan and Ryan Murphy is a great dude- I wouldn’t mind naming my child after him.

18. Last of Bryan Fox...

Last time you signed an autograph. As me or the lead singer of Three Doors Down?

Last good cd you bought. Bought- I just bought Led Zepplen 4 again. Given- Neil Diamond’s Greatest Hits.

Last time you have been to a strip club. Last time I was in New Orleans I inadvertently walked in one looking for a bar. The chicks definitely weren’t worth staying…

Last time you looked at Kimmet's butt for more than 5 second without stopping. Are you referring to Doug?

Last time Shaun Kennedy looked at your butt for more than 5 seconds without stopping. Probably the last time we played… Saturday night at Uncle Pleasants, but he made no mention of it thank goodness.

19. What advice would you give to upcoming songwriters and musicians?

Never think that you are good enough and never close your mind off to new ideas that people may think of and offer. Singers are notorious for having an ego- be better than that. If someone has a suggestion, take it seriously and don’t get offended by it. A better song is a better song. Also- if you have 500 bucks and need to record and want it to be played for anyone in the music business, record your best song perfect, not 10 of them half-ass. Everyone in the business says that they can hear past a song’s bad quality production, but all of them are lying. Most of them are not musicians, they can’t envision anything artistically. First impressions are extremely important. If you can amaze them with one amazing radio-ready song right off the bat, then usually they will give you some money to do more if they are really interested. If you want to do that then call Chris Cassetta and tell him you want to do it right. That guy is the best for the money around that I have heard.

20. Is flossing over-rated ? What are some good tips for better dental care?

Flossing is not a cure for many people’s problems. I see a ton of gum disease that is way past the point that floss can help. Brush with the bristles pointing towards your gum at a 45 degree angle and go in circles. It should at least take you 2 minutes to do your entire mouth depending on if you still have all of your teeth. Try to go to the dentist at least once a year, preferably twice…… man this is getting boring. Let’s talk about music. Oh, by the way, every person that read this owes me a consultation fee… haha

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's recap...

Bryan actually offered to do some free dental work for Donnie Hardin, but hasn't gotten a call from Donnie yet.

Doesn't know anything about the rumor that Susan Weber offered to manage his band if he would get plastic surgery.

Admits that Gwen Stefani would be fun to be on a deserted island, as well as Kimmet, but doesn't care to say if he has looked at her butt for more than 5 seconds without stopping.

Bryan did a great job and got the answers back really quick.

Thanks Bryan !

I give Bryan 5 out of 5 stars for his 20 Question Interview. êêêêê

Frank Green Interview from 2003

I was glad to do 20 Questions with Frank Green. There have been some questions about what is going on with Outspoken and he was happy to clear things up.

1. What is going on with Frank Green and the rest of Outspoken ?

well as of right now there's not much of anything going on with outspoken career wise…we were pulled off tour a while back because the record wasn't selling like nuts…labels have a very low attention span…and if we don't sell lots of records then we don't tour. its that simple…screw it. it ain't all its cracked up to be. I'm working a day job these days with shaun…kevin is out on the road with tantric…donnie is working a full time job and trying to get through a tough time he's having. and david…well I have no idea what david's doing. I hope he's well. I hope he's making some good choices for his own well being these days. this band has had some pretty screwed up moments that have led to us all pretty much sit back and re-evaluate what we want. and how we want it.

2. What inspired you to play bass and who were your first influences ?

I'm not sure if I was inspired to play bass by any one thing. it just felt so much more comfortable in my hands than a guitar. and I realized almost instantly that it was where I was supposed to be. my influences are really varied. gene simmons, justin chancellor, tom peterrson of cheap trick is an absolute god. eric avery of janes addiction is probably someone I actually sometimes think about when I'm playing. in terms of his simplicity and foundation theres no one I'd rather be in line with. but I'd say that cliff burton was someone who's playing hit me like a mack truck when I was in high school. I spent every available moment learning "anesthesia(pulling teeth)" and "orion"…the solo he does at the end of "orion" is probably a piece of music I would put in time capsule for people 300 years from now to hear.

3. What has been the highest point since joining Outspoken and what has been the lowest ?

the high point would be having our record release party at ear x-tacy and having it absolutely packed with our friends…it was a magical night for me. low point? I would say sitting in a hotel room in austin, texas and getting the news we were coming home. period. it was like someone sucked the breath out of that room. the next night playing in san antonio was the most emotional I've ever seen the band. david was in hysterics. I was in tears. everyone was floored. like a giant corporate kick in the nuts.

4. What has been to coolest show you have played and what made it so special ?

we've played a whole lot of cool shows…probably the coolest one for me was playing the experience music project in seattle…first off it was like playing the grammys…huge stage. giant digital screen behind the stage…it was packed as hell…double drive and second coming opened…we saw a lot of friends we made while recording in seattle…but the kicker was getting a tour of the hendrix portion of the project. I'm a major hendrix fan…and to literally touch one of JIMI HENDRIX'S strats is something I will cherish forever. I saw his monterey strat remnants. all his pedals. some of his hand written lyrics…his clothes…it moved me to tears. that room was adjacent to where we played and it moved me to know that vibrations I would be making in the next room would resonate through jimi's guitars.

5. What is the most money you ever made for a single show while you were with Whatever Will and what is the most money for a single show that you have made with Outspoken ?

well we made some decent money in WEW..nothing that I'd brag about. and as far as outspoken is concerned, because we operate as a business we never see money from shows. its used to pay bills such as lawyers, accountants and business managers. leeches.

6. Who are some of the famous people you have met ? Who was cool and who was not so cool ?

um lets see. scott mckenzie and I met eddie vedder and mike mccreedy…dave ellefson of megadeth was on our tour bus one morning in tempe…I woke up and went "wait a minute…wait a minute…hey kevin is that…" he just smiled…he's shorter than I thought. met jared leto at a show. he was nice even though I don't really dig his band. I was like "man he's bangin cameron diaz".

7. Time for the mandatory "reality show" scenario. You are chosen to be on a new reality show. You will be on a tropical island for 90 days. You may leave anytime, but you only receive the shows grand prize of 100 grand if you stay for the full 90 days. You will need some people to go with you. The people you choose to go with you will be paid well and several people want to go. You choose who is going with you...

1.) Scott Mckenzie -oh yeah

2.) Kevin McCreery -oh hell yeah

3.) Travis Meeks -although I have nothing against the guy I gotta leave him off

4.) Jessica from Tornacade -nope

5.) Scott Clark -man that’s a toss up…I love him like a brother but sometimes I wanna beat the hell outta him.

6.) Rachel Enriquez -can she cook? if so yes. if not then I guess not.

7.) Rahul Borkar -nah, he's asthmatic and truthfully could be a member of a sleeper cell…so I opt out on hoopa.

8.) Tom Petty -yes because of his integrity. but no because he's so goddamn annoying. ok no

9.) Devohn Moore 322 la salle place Algonquin Parkway -that guy rules but I have a no algonquin policy.

10.) Scott Frazier -oh god you're killing me. no.

9. Rate the following women on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest.

1.) Gwen Stefani -9…classy broad if you ask me

2.) Jewel -6…natural chick. she thinks she's a poet so she should get a black eye for that…she's got that snaggletooth happening too…

3.) Rachel Enriquez -one of the local chicks ehh? I'd give her a 7 or 8…never met her but know who she is…she is good friends with donnie hardin and I know him from way back.

4.) Aria Giovanni -hello. uh like 11.

5.) Kris 502 -oh man she's jail bait. its illegal for me to even consider rating her. although she's cool and has a great sense of humor I must refrain from a federal probe.

6.) Paz Lenchantin -she's actually pretty hideous close up. and she's not a terribly talented woman. so I say 4.

7.) Britney Spears - a 7 when she shuts up…but when she gets that dixie highway mouth yappin I wanna chop her head off. then throw it off the greenwood boat docks.

8.) Jessica from Tornacade -I dunno. I've never gotten a good look at her. so I'll say 6.

9.) Devon -6…not my type…not into the whole barbie on amphetamines thing

10.) Kimmet -8…shes a great woman…talented. very nice. and shes got that new yawk accent.

10. What band would you like to play bass with for one tour ?

I would do anything humanly possible to play with janes addiction. I would die totally happy. even if it was just one song it would make my life complete.

11. I will list some bands and artists and you rate them on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest.

1.) Metallica -8…their bad period is not enough to make me dump on them…they put fire in my brain.

2.) Red Hot Chili Peppers - 6..it gets old REEEEEALLY quick.

3.) A Perfect Circle -7. I like the idea more than I like the end results…but its great shit.

4.) Prince -3..I guess growing up fat, white and liking ozzy kept me from truly enjoying the ass-less pants midget himself.

5.) LIVE -5..played some shows with them and realized that I like them more when I hear them on the radio.

6.) Alice In Chains -7…damn shame. great live band. I burned some old demos when we recorded at london bridge in seattle…they are hilarious…like a bad cock rock band…

7.) KISS -7…they made me wanna play rock music…so they will always get a high mark from this guy.

8.) RUSH -4…I guess I never got it. maybe it was geddy lee's nose…man, keep the coke away from that witchy motherfucker…that mans nose is so big he could smoke a cigar in the shower…

9.) TOOL -10…saw tool about 3947 times on the lateralus tour…even left a photo shoot for our album early so I could fly home to drive to richmond virginia to see them…they are as magical a band as we have today…they are just perfect.

10.) Saliva -heh…4

12. Who has been the biggest influence on you as a person ?

I would say the members of my family…I get one aspect of myself from one person then another form someone else…I think it was a group effort…having said that I hold no one responsible for all the screwed up things I've ever done or been a part of. I've made some pretty bad choices for myself…but have found strength in what I learned growing up.

13. I will list some controversial people in the 502 scene and you give your thought...

1.) Travis Meeks - an unbelievably talented guy. but someone I think may have burned his last bridges on a professional level…but damn is he driven.

2.) Jack Brezadine -great guy. old friend. terribly unstable sometimes. love the guy though.

3.) Scott Fraizer -haven't heard a peep out of him in almost two months. its frustrating when you call someone for information and they talk about their accomplishments instead of business. he didn't come to our last two gigs. I stopped calling. he stopped calling. I guess we'll see…

4.) Mark Maxwell -likes to talk. can pretty much back up what he says though. he's a business man.

5.) Hugo Ferraria -I'm not very good friends with hugo. kevin is pretty close with him…I will say that he is really helping us out with some demo's were doing…great knack for melody. and damn this new music is stupid.

6.) Nick Haas -heh…this may have been a shaun question. but nick likes to talk too…sometimes its alarming…like holy shit this guy is really blazing. then you see him a year later and he never utters a sound.

7.) Dave Fraizer -spent a lot of time, tears and patience with and on david. one of the most naturally talented people I've ever met. but like most of the talented ones, he has this opposite side. which is purely destructive to himself and things around him. I love the man like a brother. and hope he never crosses that line…but I fear that I'll get a call one day and it will be to tell me that david is dead. we haven't seen much of each other in months. a few rehearsals. a few gigs. he was late to our gig with saliva…45 late to soundcheck. like I said, I love the guy but sometimes for the sake of yourself you have to walk away from situations in your life that cause you pain. I hope he takes care of himself.

8.) Jon Paris -you mean jon delph? never cared for him…he's been shitty to many friends of mine and his songs were terrible…next

9.) Chuck Willis -people say he's arrogant. I don't see it because I rarely go see them. he's always been level headed and normal around me so…I wish he would develop more of his own personality in his singing voice…if that happened he would be an unstoppable frontman.

10.) Chris Volz -talented man who is, in my opinion, battling things most of us can't even fathom. I'll leave it at that.

11.) Bobby Burns -I've known of bobby for 10 years…he played in a band called breath with tommy thomas, bobby o(magnetic flux) and dave hoback…last time I saw them they did a show at the tiger I believe and he and bobby o were wearing these long skirts…it was a riot. sorry bobby…I said I would keep that hush hush…but he's been at it a long time…and has always been super nice to me.

12.) Susan Weber -great person for the scene…she gets great satisfaction helping bands in certain aspects and phases of their career…

14. Outspoken becomes hugely successful and someone is writing a tell-all book about the band. They are interviewing all the people that know you way too well. Who do you really hope keeps their mouth shut ? Who has the most dirt on you ?

I'm gonna say scott mckenzie and shaun kennedy have pretty much all the dirt on me that I need swept under the rug…but then again I have the same leverage with them so they better watch their punk ass mouths.

15. You recently bought a new bass guitar. Would you give us a run-down of your guitars and other equipment that you are proud to own ?

well I've been a fender man for about 10 years now…it just feels perfect in my hands…having said that I will also say that 80% of the fender basses I pick up are trash. absolute trash. the quality control is on crack. but I've really focused my collection down to a few pieces these days. fender 57 p bass reissue…it’s the bass I recorded our whole album on…rick parashar said he had never recorded a bass that was so rich and musical…and considering his past it almost made me cry…fender Sting signature bass…basically the 51 reissue in a better color…so old fashioned…but so sweet…I have an esp p bass from way back…that belonged to a friend or two who lived in L.A. and somehow made it back to my hands…and some various junk guitars and an acoustic. amp wise its all ampeg…I have an svt 2, svt 4, and 4 prhlf410 cabinets…it’s a lot of power. it really rattles my brain and loosens my sphincter when its all set up and blowing…

18. Last of Frank Green...

1.) Last famous person you've talked to ? I guess josey scott…

2.) Last good movie you have seen ? confessions of a dangerous mind…what a great movie

3.) Last really fun show you have played ? probably would be blowing live off the stage at the murat egyptian room in indianapolis back in july…they were not happy.

4.) Last time you were on a tour bus ? on saliva's last month…on mine in april…ok now I'm mad.

5.) Last time you signed an autograph ? at a five star store in bullitt county last month. I was doing a clown show and magic act.

19. If you got to host a local show similar to Punk'd, who would you most like to punk and what would you do ?

A. Nicci Green-man, she'd be doing the punking…I can never seem to pull the wool over her eyes…she keeps me in line too…so shes out.

B. Andrew Kauz-he's an oildriller…but one hell of a nice guy who has been a great friend to me. even though we’ve only met twice and he lived in new mexico he really went way out of his way to help outspoken…he's too cool…so I say nay.

C.) Billy Walker-that jackass is made to be punk'd…but I will say that he and his milf wife saved my ass after I was driving him home from doing underground lou and my car broke down…then when his wife showed up she shut the car off and then theirs wouldn't start either…I think I was possessed. but they were generous so I say no again.

D.) Jason Schneider-ok I would have to say yes to jay…he's so funny that he would understand…our time in bands together was one constant punk'd episode. I wish I could say half of the stuff that has happened to us but goddammit I can't.

20. What is the most you have learned about the music business since joining Outspoken ?

I learned it’s a bullshit business full of bullshit people. I have learned to trust no one. they don't deserve it. it's a castle built on a fault line. it’s a beautiful vision built on shit. I'm sure oz was much more enchanting before dorothy knew about the man behind the curtain. same here…I wish I could forget the things I've seen and endured…although I wouldn't change it, I would never do it the same.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's recap...
Frank Green was a tour bus as recently as last month, the one Saliva was on when they came to town.

Admitted that the band "LIVE" is not that good "Live".

Thinks that Aria Giovanni is a hot, hot chick, (she is a model and she is marrying the guitarist for Marilyn Manson soon. )

Has reservations about spending an extended period of time with Scott Clark or Tom Petty.

Some of Frank's answers were longer than a Donnie Highland or Nick Haas phone call, but very interesting and worth the time. I give him 4 out of 5 stars. I didn't think my questions were as good as they could have been, so maybe he deserves 5 stars for making the best of the questions he was given. I definitely want to do another 20 questions with him in the future. He gets 4 stars. I got more responses from Frank's 20 Questions than anyone else so far, so I am changing his ranking to 5 stars !!!

Thanks Frank ! GO RAIDERS !

I give Frank 5 out of 5 stars for his 20 Question interview. êêêêê

Donnie Hardin Interview from 2004

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Donnie formerly of Rampant, POA, 1080, Deface, and now with ENGRIND was willing to answer 20 Questions, so check it out now....

1. You are singing with Engrind now. How is that going and are you currently
involved with any other bands?

It is a dream doing vocals for Engrind and it is going great! I played my
first show with them at Headliners at Attitude Fest and it was an amazing
feeling. Our next show is New Year's Eve at Pappys with Kallus, Incursion,
Flatlyne, Absence of Faith, Lust 4 Hate.
As far as other bands on occasion I work on some stuff in the studio with
"Transcend" with Nick Houpt on drums and Jon Kinninmoth on guitar. I think
they are looking for a bass player still. But every now and then I go over
and record some vocals.

2. What singers have had the most influence on you?

Well the whole reason I even started doing vocals was because Sepultura's
"Roots" cd came out and I could sound just like Max and a friend of mine
made me do it all the time. And thats why I sound like I do. Other than
Max...I'd have to say Phil Anselmo (Pantera, SJR , Chino Moreno (Deftones),
Rob Flynn (Machine Head), Mike Patton (Faith No More, whatever bands he is
in at the time).

3. If you could go on tour as an opening band for a national act, who would
you most like to open for and hang out with for a few months ?

Well my dream is to play Ozzfest, thats my ultimate goal in life. So I
guess I could sat Ozzy but I know I wouldnt ever see him and who knows if
he'll even be there from now on. So other than Ozzy I would have to
say...Soulfly. It's Max. And now our local boy Bobby Burns is playing
bass..fuckin awesome.

4. What local bands are the most over-rated, which bands deserve more
respect ?

Simple..the most over-rated local bands are cover bands. Although it's fun
and really I have nothing against it, the creativity factor is out the
window. And I believe it takes a lot more musicianship to write something
original. Like I said I have nothing against any cover bands but that they
get a lot more support from local bars, therefore I feel they in-turn do not
give proper respect to "original" local acts.

5. What show was the most fun for you, and what show was the worst ?

Man this is tough. I always had the most fun playing with national acts
of course, but other than that when I was in Rampant we went down to
Nashville and played a show, there were like 400 people there, none of them
knew who we were but they loved us. That was a really cool feeling. But
right at the top of the list is a show I just played "Attitude Fest" at
Headliners, my first show with Engrind. That was a great night.

6. What musician would you most like to meet ? Have you met anyone famous
that you were impressed with ?

The most down to earth musician I have ever met was Billy from Biohazard
(guitar, vocals) He took us in (Point Of Anger) let us stay at his crib, and
recorded our EP in Biohazards studio right under the Brooklyn Bridge. He
taught me a lot really in a very short time. And he even did a part on our
cd in the song (Weaken The Power) he does the chorus with me..that I wrote.
IM proud of that moment. lol. Another memorable moment was when me and Mike
(POA) were riding in his convertible at night in NYC. And I remember be in
awe of the World Trade Center hovering over us with all its lights on. I
knew it was a precious moment but didn't realize it was that precious. That
was in July 2000. Billy was the shit.

7. Last of Donnie Hardin...

1.) Last girl you kissed ? I'm not going to say. She might not remember. And she might get mad. lol.

2.) Last cd that you bought ? downthesun

3.) Last good movie you have seen ? Requiem for a Dream (i think that's the
name)

4.) Last book you have read ? "It Doesn't Take a Hero"...Norman Schwarzkopf
I'm fascinated with War and the generals who lead them.

5.) Last good concert you have seen ? This is funny because it was a band I hate. Or I thought I hated. I took my niece to see Godsmack at the Palace, I was impressed by the showmanship. Sully really is an awesome showman, I don't care how much I get bashed for saying it. I still don't like the music that much, but hey they rocked. lol. Although nothing tops an Ozzfest show.
Best ever was 1998 I think when Tool played at Deer Creek (Classic) the sod flying through the air is such a great memory.

8. What kind of equipment do you own? Is there any particular processor or
effects that you like to sing through?

I have nothing just my voice. Dave has a PA and mics for us to practice
with. Eventually though I want to get a good mic pre-amp to use live.

9. 18. What advice would you give to any musicians just starting out in the
local scene ?

Stick with it. There will be good times and bad times. People trying to
hate on ya, everything. Just be stubborn and stick with it. Support the
scene by making friends with the scene. Eventually it feels like a big
family. Dont try to be like the musicians who think they are too good to
mingle within the community and go to shows. Being a fan is the most
important part of being a true musician.

10. I will list some people and you give your thoughts...

1.) Chris Volz - awesome singer.

2.) Susan Weber - Don't know her really well but has always been cool to
me.

3.) Phil Anselmo - He is an icon, wish he would straighten up.

4.) Frank Green - Use to beat up on me when I was a little kid. Great
guy..awesome bass player.

5.) Sailor (MOV) - One of the best frontmen in the region, knows how to put
on a show.

6.) Rachel Enriquez - Amazing. Artistic. Beautiful. Warm hearted, caring as
a person, awesome friend, awesome singer!

7.) Jay (Blyss) - Jay is the shizznit. Has tremendous desire and strong
work ethic as a musician, good guy. He deserves success.

8.) Dave Wathen - Brilliant drummer, super cool guy. Awesome playing in a
band with one of my favorite drummers around.

9.) Travis Meeks - Really good songwriter.

10.) Van Avery - Misunderstood, GREAT person. Awesome vocalist!

11.) Ozzy Osbourne - Ozzy is god.

12.) Jessica (from Tornacade) - Somebody hook me up. Let me wipe the drool
from my face. Gorgeous, fantastic singer.

11. You were hanging out with Rachel Enriquez for a while. Do you two still
hang out and were you dating at any point ?

Me and Rachel have and always will be super close. We hang out every chance
we get. She is an incredible person and has helped me when nobody else
could. I think we will always have that closeness to each other.

12. I will list some bands and you rate how psyched you would be to sing for
them...On a scale of 1 - 10.

1.) Pantera - 10+ legends

2.) P.O.D. - 10+ legends

3.) Sepultura 10+ legends

4.) Metallica - 10+ legends

5.) Decapitated Cattle - 5 they are ok

6.) Tantric -2 really bad idea

7.) Sugar Ray -7 even worse idea.

8.) BioHazard - 10+ legends

9.) Outspoken - +2 probably wouldn't work very well, good music though.

10.) Cradle of Filth - my grandma has it covered.

11.) Speed of Sound - not sure who they are

12.) Dimmu Borgir - +8 would be quite interesting

13. In the last year has Donnie Hardin...

1.) Seen BJ Abner, Rachel Enriquez or Jessica from Tornacade naked ?

No haven't seen BJ naked (don't want to) nor have I seen Rachel..and as far as
Jessica..I am working on getting that done!

2.) Thought about buying rolling papers in bulk to save money ?

Well I quit smoking weed, but I've thought about that before. lol.

3.) Kissed Rachel Enriquez ? Who's business would that be?

4.) Delivered a pizza ? No

5.) Gone to the dentist ? Believe it or not..yes. lol. Despite what reports
from Mexcan Dentist may say.

6.) Signed an autograph - yep signed 2 Saturday.

14. What are your 5 favorite CDs or all-time ?

Pantera - Vulgar Display Of Power
Alice in Chains - Dirt
Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Korn - Korn

15. What are your 5 favorite movies of all-time ?

Goodfellas
Platoon
Appocalypse Now
Scarface
Pulp Fiction

17. You are chosen to be on a new reality show, you will be on a deserted
island for 90 days. You will have a nice place to stay with plenty to eat
and drink. You get to choose 3 people to go with you. 2 of them must be
girls and one must be a guy. Who would you ask to go ?

Well I'm leaving out several I would want to take but I would want Jessica
from Tornacade and Rachel Enriquez. I have to take a guy? Hmm. I guess I'd
take Nick (Incursion, InTheClear) so I can have someone to get drunk with.

18. What would be the best present you could hope to get for Christmas this
year?

For all my friends to come to Pappy's New Years Eve and all the females to
wear red thongs.

19. Who has had the biggest influence on you as a person?

As a person...wow another tough one. There are so many people that are
really good friends to me. But my father is the person who is looking out
for me all the time keeping some-what sane. Both my parents have always
been so helpful and I like to help people because of the way I was brought
up. I admire them both for teaching me such a valuable lesson.

20. I forgot one question so, techincally Donnie asked and answered the last one.

StarSixtyNiners [12:03 AM]: i have one question left to ask
TheVilleScreamer [12:03 AM]: ok
StarSixtyNiners [12:03 AM]: i found a blank
TheVilleScreamer [12:03 AM]: oops

StarSixtyNiners [12:04 AM]: ok, i have to think of a good one, any suggestions ?
TheVilleScreamer [12:04 AM]: umm.
TheVilleScreamer [12:04 AM]: you can ask about jessica again
TheVilleScreamer [12:04 AM]: lol
TheVilleScreamer [12:05 AM]: i'll talk about her all day
StarSixtyNiners [12:05 AM]: ok any girl in the 502 scene that you would like to ask out but haven't ?
TheVilleScreamer [12:05 AM]: Most definitely Jessica from Tornacade.
TheVilleScreamer [12:06 AM]: haha
TheVilleScreamer [12:06 AM]: hows that?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's recap...Donnie wants to fuck Jessica.

Thanks Donnie !

Donnie gets 5 out of 5 stars for his 20 Question Interview. êêêêê

Ooh-la-la 2

Kevin McCreery Inverview from 2003

20 Questions with Kevin McCreery from Outspoken. Kevin needed to vent and he just got back from doing a 4 week long tour with Tantric. This should be good.

1. What is going on with Outspoken these days ? Are you still excited to be a part of the band ?

You know, I'm not really sure what's going on in the Outspoken camp, it's pretty sad, cuz I don't even care. I recently heard that Lava wants another record, but it's all hear say at this point. I haven't heard a peep from my management in a month.
I wish that I could say that I'm excited but I'm far from it. Too much negative stuff happened too quick and it took the wind out of my sails. You would have to pay me big $$ to do another record. I don't know if I could even live on a bus with a couple of the guys anymore.

2.. The last 2 years or so have been full of ups and downs for you. What has been the best moments, and what has been the worst moments ?

The best moments were recording at London Bridge with Rick Parashar, seeing the Cd released and hitting the road in a tour bus. The worst time was when they pulled tour support and told us we weren't going out with Stone Sour. It was so abrupt and we were already on all the adds all over the country. A friend of mine who I hadn't been in touch with in awhile flew all the way to Myrtle Beach from Michigan to see me and we weren't playing. I felt horrible.

3. You just went on a tour with Tantric. You got to play some nice venues with them. What was the most fun part of that tour ? What, if any was the worst part ?

The whole tour was mostly House of Blues and they're all pretty cool places. The guys in Tantric are great. I get along with them well. The whole tour was fun. Going into it, I only knew Hugo. It gave me a chance to get to know Jesse, Todd and Matt. We laughed a whole lot. I hung with Mark Tremonti at his house in Orlando, hung with Vinnie Paul in Dallas and with Nuno in LA and I also made a new friend in Steve Ferlazzo, who plays keyboards with Nuno in Population 1 and in Tribe of Judah, Gary Cherone's band. We've vowed to play together at some point in the future. Kenny Olsen from Kid Rock was at a couple of shows.

The opening band every night was a band called "Sloth". Great guys. The last night of the tour in Vegas, during their set, we threw all of the deli tray stuff at them from the side of the stage, it was a mess. Beer, veggies, baby powder... just a stinkin mess. the HOB crew were freakin out.

4. What inspired you to play guitar and who are your biggest influences ?

My dad played in groups as I was growing up, I'd just sit behind the drum set and bang away or pluck on his guitar when it was sitting out. Ever since I can remember, I've been infatuated by music. I would skip school just to stay home and learn entire albums. It's also ruined every good relationship I've ever had.

I would say that influence wise, early on, it was Grand Funk Railroad. Then I discovered KISS, Black Sabbath, Rush, Led Zep, Montrose, Ted Nugent, UFO.. bands that had cool guitar players! Then came the first Van Halen record. It changed my life. The first 6 VH records are still my fav albums ever along with just about anything by Led Zep. The 80's brought Randy Rhoads, he was incredible. These days I listen to NIN, Mars Volta, Extreme (3 sides to Every story is a masterpiece), Van Halen, Alice In Chains, Yes, all kinds of different stuff. I'm also a die hard Prog Rock fan. Yes, Genesis and that kind of stuff is amazing music. It's over most peoples heads that are casual music listeners. It's very symphonic in the way that the instruments relate and move with each other, but the guitar, bass and keyboards take the place of horns, violins and cellos. I'd have to say that The Mars Volta is the only band in recent years that has moved me to push the boundries of my playing and writing.

5. You seem to be a fanatic of music gear. Will you give us a run-down of your live set-up, and also please list any other cool gear that you are proud to own.

Right now, I'm still using Mesa/Boogie Triple Rectifiers for amps. Great rock n roll amps. There are a few other things out there I'd like to try out. The new Line 6 stuff is amazing. I'd love to have a Vetta. I have a couple of Peavey guitars that are cool, I have a deal with them. I use the Limited and Generation series, I also have a Wolfgang. I have 3 Fender Strats that are amazing. All three are unique from each other. My baby, the White (or nicotine yellow now) Strat I've had since 1979 or 80. It's heavier than any Les Paul I've ever picked up. It's just a great rock guitar. Effects wise I use a Lexicon MPX G2, Line 6 Chorus pedal (the Blue one) and a cry-baby wah. I'm an effects junkie. Writing a good song is one thing, creating soundscapes within that framework is a whole other ballgame. I love it. the Lexicon unit has everything you could ever want. It's not very user friendly, though. I also still own an original Electro Harmonix Golden Throat II talk box. I've had it since 1977 and it's never broken down.

6. What has been the most exciting show you have played and what made it so great ?

The Experience Music Project in Seattle was probably the best show ever, but not performance wise. It was packed and it felt like you were playing at the AMA's, Grammy's or whatever. just incredible. There was a huge video wall behind the stage, it was larger than life. The Hendrix Sky Church gave me goose bumps. The history and the genius of Hendrix is on full display. original guitars, amps, his clothing and lyric sheets hand written on hotel stationary... it almost moved me to tears.

7. I will list some people in the Louisville scene and you give me your thoughts on them...

1.) Hugo Ferraria - I like Hugo. he's always done right by me. he's the reason that I'm in Tantric. He IS a lead singer, though! we've written together a bit and he brings a whole new approach to the table that inspires me. Maybe a little self destructive, but I've never met a singer that isn't.

2.) Mark Maxwell - I don't really know Mark that well. he's always been very nice to me. Seems to know his stuff well. I know a little of his history. I've only been in Louisville for 3 years so, there's a lot that I don't know about people. I tend to be very forgiving and give people the benefit of the doubt.

3.) Travis Meeks - I've met Travis a couple of times and i couldn't follow his conversation. it went 10 different directions at the same time. He's a great songwriter, though.

4.) Kimmet - Kimmet has one of the best female voices around. That rasp, filled with power and emotion is incredible. She's also a good friend. I sent a few of the demo's out last year and really didn't get any interest from anyone which is unfortunate because I think she needs a deal.

5.) Scott Clark - Scott cracks me up. when we were recording in Seattle, Scott and Todd Blankenship flew out. that's where I really got to know Scott. him and I just made jokes about everything and we were killing each other. I think it all started when we drove past a small, rusted out water tower and I said "wow, the Space Needle sure looks a lot smaller close up". It was on after that.

6.) Susan Weber - She is a mystery to me. we've always gotten along, she's very nice and almost worked a couple of projects together but I'm not so sure she knows everyone she claims. she needs a bigger purse to avoid dropping all of those names...

7.) Kevin Garr - I've been playing in Speed of Sound while I'm home and so far we get on great. He's a top notch player for sure.

8.) Shaun Kennedy - Shaun and I have had our ups and downs and unfortunately right now were on a down. We live together. Our personalities are very different and I know that I rub him the wrong way a lot of the time, but I know that 90% of the people he interacts with are in that category. He's anti-social and smart. His anger about the band and industry is totally misdirected towards me instead of the addict that tore it apart. that said, I'm no prince either. I just make the hard choice.

9.) Frank Green - I hope to God that Frank and I can still play together. He has made me laugh more than Steve Martin and George Carlin combined. a great bass player, a great friend, I would take a bullet for him. He is always the voice of reason when the shit hits the fan and I value his input tremendously. He is also one of the most intelligent guys I know.

10.) Jack Brezadine - Yet again, don't know him real well but have always gotten along with him. seems to have a make up and fishnet fetish. :)

11.) Scott Fraizer - The Bible says "Pride cometh before the fall". well, that's my cue to get out of falling distance. I think Scott would be an amazing manager if he embraced his short comings and learned from them. Instead he pats himself on the back for the obvious things that he gets paid to do. There's also a saying "the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree". we may as well bring the "other" Frazier in to this. How self destructive does someone have to get before they can't even look at themselves in the mirror? obviously a whole hell of a lot, there are a lot of mirrors in his apartment. I've never met anyone in my entire life that uncomfortable in their own skin.

12.) Donnie Highland - Donnie is my pal. He was the first guy in this band that I felt a connection with in the beginning. My heart hurts for him. after we came home from tour, the band basically fell apart and some things in his personal life took a turn for the worse. when it rains, it pours. I wish I had an umbrella to give him.

13.) Kellee Owens - Isn't that Shaun's ex girlfriend that thinks she can sing and play keyboards?

8. If you could meet anyone and hang out with them for an entire day, who would it be and what would you do ?

Jesus, in the flesh. we'd walk around, heal people, talk with them. you know, it's the little things that matter most.

9. What band or performer would you most like to play guitar with for at least one tour ?

Madonna, David Lee Roth, Prince, Gary Cherone

10. What are your favorites...

1.) Favorite guitarist - I can't pick one. EVH, Nuno, Phil Keaggy, Jimmy Page, Steve Howe, Trevor Rabin, Neil Schon, Ty Tabor

2.) Favorite guitar - I like fender style guitars as a whole. strat style. PRS are very nice and the new Peavey's are very good as well, that's why I play them.

3.) Favorite CD - It changes everyday. something by VH, LZ Mars Volta, Radiohead, Yes, The newer Sunny Day Real Estate stuff, Extreme 3 Sides, King's X dogman.

4.) Favorite Food - Sushi or Indian

5.) Favorite Movie - Amadeus, Dead Poets Society

6.) Favorite 80's band - Does Van Halen count? If not, I'll take GnR

11. Time for the reality show scenario question: You are chosen to be on a new reality show. You will be paid 2 grand a week to stay in a house with 13 other people for 6 weeks. Luckily you win a challenge and get to choose what people need to leave after the first week. No one wants to go, because they are getting paid 2 grand also. I will list the people in the house, you say who can stay and who better go.

1.) Frank Green - Frank has to stay. He'll keep me laughing and sane.

2.) Kimmet - Kimmet will stay, she's a positive person and heck, we can sit around bust out the guitars and piano and sing.

3.) Jessica from Tornacade - Don't really know her that well, but we'll need to keep a few females around. she used to be a stripper so maybe it'll be good entertainment. she can stay if she gets naked.

4.) Erika (banned chick) - Erika has been to rehab and is getting her life together, the last thing she needs to do is be in a house with me and Frank...and a stripper! lol..

5.) Shaun Kennedy - Shaun will want to beat me up all the time, just like at our real home, he's gotta go. It's my turn.

6.) Kevin Garr - As much as I'd like to keep him, someone's gotta go. Plus it's another bass player. Him and Frank would be arguing that "My SVT's bigger than yours". I've known Frank longer so, I love you Kevin but it's time to go, I'll see ya at the Hill next gig..

7.) Jeff Williams - I'd keep Jeff around just to hear him talk. he cracks me up.

8.) Scott Fraizer - Isn't it bad enough that I live within 10 miles already? I don't think so.

9.) David Lee Roth - As much as I love DLR, I think he would drive me nuts living in a house with him. see ya on the road buddy!

10.) Bryan Fox - Bryan and I are buds. I think he would be a good addition to the acoustic jam with Kimmet.

11.) Ryan Murphy - Ryan's about ready to have a kid, I don't think he'd want to participate.

12.) Shania Twain - Yeah, let's keep her. does it matter why?

13.) Scott Clark - As long as I don't have to do the KISS Love Gun hug every time we see each other, he can stay. Plus, he hooks me up all the time. We eventually will drive each other crazy.

12. I heard that Susan Weber offered to manage End of Me ( formerly Bryan Fox Band) under the stipulation that Bryan get plastic surgery on his face. Did you hear about this and what do you think about it ?

I never heard that. if it's true, it's crap. I don't get it.

13. In the last year has Kevin McCreery -

1.) Written a Christian song - Yes

2.) Been to a strip club - yes

3.) Had a sexual fantasy involving Kimmet - no, as far as you know

4.) Seen Shaun Kennedy kiss a guy - absolutely

5.) Called Scott Fraizer a dick - yes I have

6.) Considered getting married again - yes, Sarah and I discussed it. she hates my job so we've stopped discussing it.

14. I will list some bands and performers and you rate how excited you would be to play guitar for them for a new cd and 50 city U.S. tour. (10 being extremely excited, and 1 being very likely to turn it down.)

1.) Sammy Hagar - 8. I wouldn't turn it down, even though I'm not a huge fan. he seems decent enough.

2.) David Lee Roth - 10

3.) Rush - 1. Alex Lifeson is the man. I wouldn't be able to fill his shoes.

4.) Linkin Park - 5 if the $$ was right.

5.) Poison - Hmm, this is tricky. I wasn't a big fan but if offered a gig I might do it...6

6.) Slayer - 1

7.) Counting Crows - 10, love them

8.) Jane's Addiction -10, that would be a great gig.

9.) Dream Theater - I could never play in that band. they're too good. 1

10.) Days of the New - If the timing was right I'd do it, 7.

11.) Tantric -10, duh!

12.) The Cure - 1, that'd be a Shaun gig.

13.) The Police - Love the Police, Andy is the guitarist, not me.

14.) Prince - 10, dream gig right there.

15.) Michael Jackson - 10. regardless of what anyone says, he's a great artist. I'd play in a heartbeat.

16.) Journey - 10 I am a HUGE Journey fan, this is one band I would play with even though the guitarist is an integral part of the band.

15. Since Halloween is just a day away. If you could have a date on Halloween with any local female, who would it be and which costume would you most like for her to wear on your date ? A.) Sexy Nurse B.) Sexy She-Devil C.) Sexy Gothic Vampire D.) Sexy School Girl E.) Sexy Firefighter

Sarah, my girlfriend. I'm not really into the porn looking costumes when it's my girlfriend. I'll take the Firefighter.

16. Since you have moved to Louisville, what person are you most thankful to have met? What person would you have been better off not meeting ?

Hmmm, I've met a lot of cool people here, I actually met Shaun and Donnie while I was living in Nashville so I'll start with Frank. Frank is the kinda guy you want to be in a band with. Great attitude, great player and knows his stuff. Michael Lee is someone I'm glad I met. Sarah, my girlfriend. All the guys in End of Me, Breckinridge, Tantric.. it's a brotherhood. I can't say that there is anyone that I would have been better off not meeting. Even through all of the ups and downs of the band, I don't regret meeting certain individuals. Granted, my life would have been much more stress free.. but you take the bad with the good in this industry.

A word to the wise: If someone has to tell you that they're a genius, they're not. Take half of what you hear, cut it in half and then believe half of that. damn.. I'm a genius!

17. Lava Records has a heavy metal band signed that has just released their 2nd cd. The latest cd has been a huge hit overseas and is really getting popular here in the states. However, they have one big problem. A 12 week tour of the states is just a couple of weeks away, and their guitarist has been in a serious car accident. You get a call from the band's management asking you if you would be interested in doing the tour. The songs are simple in structure, but the leads are somewhat challenging. They know not every guitarist could pull it off. The latest video has made them over-night sensations. Getting a good replacement is critical. The pay is 2 grand a week, plus a 10 grand bonus if you complete the entire 12 week tour. You are on hiatus from all other gigs for the next 3 months, so your schedule is open. Here is the only dilemma: Most of the songs the band has written have strong satanic messages. You will be doing one "live" video with the band. You will have to wear a huge temporary tattoo on your arm that says "I Hate Jesus" or sometimes you can wear one that says " I "Heart" Jesus" with a slash through the word "heart". That's 34 grand you can make in 3 months. You can give some of it to your favorite charity and maybe start a college fund for your girls. Would you do it ?

I don't even have to think about it. I wouldn't do it. Mostly because of the tattoo, I would have to change my belief system. I would be much richer in spirit for turning it down.

I listen to a lot of music that disagrees with my spiritual views. For instance, Tool are one of my favorite bands but most of Maynard's lyrics are Anti-Christian. NIN are another example. Music is art. Christians can enjoy Pagan art without changing their beliefs. It doesn't mean that I buy into any particular lifestyle just because I love their art. Most Christians would disagree with me. I would point them to a book called "Sham Pearls Before Real Swine" or Addicted to Mediocrity", both written by Franky Schaeffer. Most people that consider themselves Christian these days would ban Shakespeare and nudity. They just want a picture of a nice landscape, with a scripture verse written at the bottom to hang in their living rooms.

18. Do you see many similarities in what happened with Tantric and Travis Meeks, and what is happening with Outspoken and David Fraizer ? Is there a curse on Louisville bands, or are Louisville bands no worse off than L.A. metal bands of the 80s or the grunge bands from Seattle in the 90s ? Remember, all the successful grunge singers had their bouts with self-destruction, Layne Staley, Kurt Cobain, Scott Weiland, Eddie Vedder, and if you think back to the 80s, you see what happened to Axl Rose, David Lee Roth and Boy George. Is this all just par for the course with singers ?

I do see the similarities but I don't think there's a curse on Louisville bands. It's just singers. I don't know why. Maybe the thing that tears them apart is what drove them to become the singer, the center of attention. It's like with drugs, you start out doing a little, then a little more then before you know it you're a full fledged addict and can't live without it. It's the same with adulation for them. they need people to watch them, to focus on them to hear them proclaim their message to the world! and by God if they don't get it, they'll make you! I've seen singers just walk into a room, go up to a girl whisper a little something in their ear and they leave together even when the girl was with another guy. It's crazy. It's the ego boost. The need to be god. Nothing is impossible for me!! They think that drugs won't hurt them and that's why they will eventually die from it unless they get help. Help involves getting in touch with yourself and being happy with yourself and to an artist that can be a scary thing, to them, it could be the very thing that dries up their creativity. Outspoken is the first band in 10 years that I wasn't the lead singer, so I kinda know what I'm talking about. I don't remember ever being THAT bad though. My old band may have a different view though, lol.

19. As Christmas gets closer, you get a big dose of the Christmas spirit. You decide to give gifts to the following people. The gifts can be materialist, such as a sweater, or non-materialist as in, humility, class, compassion, or a hypothetical item, such as a bullshit filter. Who gets what ?
This is gonna be hard..

1.Frank Green- Success and a happy marriage, he deserves it. Frank is not a materialistic person. anything I could just "hand" him wouldn't do justice.

2.Donnie Highland- Peace of mind, a successful music career and a mate that respects him for who he is.

3.Shaun Kennedy- A gig in Sevendust or at least a gig with a Lowery brother.

4.David Fraizer- Honesty, spirituality, an all natural high that never wears off that allows you to do your job and be responsible.. and a kick in the nuts (just for old times sake).

5.Sarah (your girlfriend) - Tolerance to handle what I do for a living. It's really the only thing we fight about. we love each other very much yet the only way it will ever work is if I quit or she becomes more tolerant. I've never been more in love with anyone in my entire life. If we broke up, I'd stay single for the rest of my life. She really didn't understand what she was getting herself into.

6. Jeff Williams- A bull horn, that great voice needs to be even louder.

7.Kevin Harley (me)- A Pulitzer prize for coming up with these questions!

8. Hugo Ferraria- Hugo has a great family and a great band, maybe I could give him more appreciation, but I'm not so sure that he doesn't appreciate what he's got. Life gets so hectic in this industry that you forget to stop and enjoy it. Enjoy the ride by all means, but don't forget that the ride eventually stops, even if just for awhile. Don't make all the fanfare your life, respect and love the people close to you. They're not disposable.

9.Scott Fraizer- I think this is where a Bullshit filter comes in. I'm a big fan of the Truth. I always want the truth no matter how much it hurts. if he would just learn to shoot straight and not sugar coat things, it would be a 100% improvement on his character. I'm not saying that everything he say's is a lie. A lot of it is "half-truths". But then again, when Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, half of what the Devil was saying to him was the truth. hmmm...

10.David Lee Roth- I would love to give DLR a chance to go back and rethink the whole leaving VH issue. Just think if after 1984, if he wouldn't have left.

11.Kimmet- I would love to get her a deal and see what she could do on the road. I think she has star quality. maybe that would be my gift: The powers that be would see her star quality.

12.Scott Clark- What does Scott need? he's a local celebrity on the Fox, has a beautiful girlfriend, gets to take trips to the Dominican Republic and go to all the cool concerts for free because of his celebrity. He should give ME a present! dang.. I'm jealous. Thou Shalt Not Covet....lol

20. Who has has the biggest influence on you as a person ?

This is gonna sound hokey but, Jesus. Everyone thanks Jesus, God whatever. But seriously, I was lost at a time and point in my life and the Lord pulled me out of it. Big time. I have no question as to the existence of God. I actually have a degree in Theology. I'm not the best Christian, as a matter of fact I'm a pretty good sinner. without Jesus I'd be hopeless.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's recap...

Kev has written a Christian song and been to a strip club more than once in the last year.

He likes Prince, who is very spiritual, and sings songs about God, yet also sings songs with the titles "Sexy Mother Fucker" and "Pussy Control", and another that makes reference to a girl's titties bouncing (Peach).

He has seen Shaun Kennedy kiss a guy. He's called Scott Fraizer a dick. He's thought about getting married and he thinks Susan Weber and Scott Fraizer might need a bullshit filter.

He would also like to give David "E" Fraizer a kick in the nuts for Christmas.

Thanks Kev !!

Sensational Stereos

Paul "Demo King" Interview from 2003

Paul "Demo King" has been recording demos for many local bands and is a frequent poster on the Factor 9 board. He is also a musician and songwriter. I got some requests to do a 20 Questions with him, so here you go people...

1. How long have you been recording, and what are some of the local bands that you have worked with ?

I have been doing my own recording for probably 10 years... started out buying all the stuff just to get my music ideas down and work with them. Just in the last year did I start to branch into doing it for other people. I did the initial Odesa demo for my old buddy Vic Hillerich for free, as a favor, and I thought it turned out decent. I mean, it was recorded in a living room and bathroom of a house over off Taylor blvd, and came out ok. It got me thinking. Then they decided to give the demo away for free, which means good circulation for a local demo, and since it had my name plastered all over it, that really helped kick things in the ass and get the inquires coming. I started posting on the factor9 boards about doing it cheap, and one thing led to another, and I have recorded 17 bands this year. Aside from Odesa, I've done Transpire, From Within, Ketchup Stigmata, Blyss, Gabalein, Full Tilt, a bunch of others, and I have several coming up in February when the new studio space is completed.

2. What instruments do you play and are you also a songwriter ?

I play guitar mainly, bass, piano, some percussion I can do OK. I could have been a great drummer if I would have had it my way... sigh.... I do write my own stuff, and I have an old song of mine at www.mp3.com/tubetude if it hasn't been taken down yet if anyone wants to check it out. It was recorded about 4 years ago, written about 6 years ago or more, so things have changed some since then. I've become too busy with everyone else's stuff to pay any attention to mine as of late, but that will change soon. One thing some people may find interesting is that the singer in From Within is messing around with some of my stuff. Look for a possible short EP around March or so, if we continue to collaborate. Hell, maybe a full length, if we can pull it off without upsetting his band mates. I really want to learn to play a bowed instrument, like violin, or especially cello. Too cool.

3. You have been around awhile, I know you hung out with Frank Green at some point, were you ever in any local bands that played out around Louisville ?

I have been in several local bands that played around here, but its been a long time now. MY last band was by far the best and tightest band I was ever in, and when we split at 3 years, we had never played a single show. Sad eh? I don't really care to play shows too much, I just like to play. I get a little freaked out. Played a few car shows and I thought I was going to hyperventilate. Ha! Don't get me wrong, I love it and I'll do it in a heartbeat, but I'm just as happy NOT packing all that stuff from place to smoky place and back again. I just like to play, bottom line.
Oh, Frank Green. Well, we never really hung around, exactly. I was in a band with Kenny Hardin (Donnie's big bro, former POA bass player) and John Caudill for about 250 years, and Frank was in Dodge City with the current drummer of Breckinridge. Frank and Scott would come to Kenny's house some time to see us practice, and I think there was a bit of an unspoken rival thing going on there, heh... he and Kenny where more likely the ones to hang out, though. I know (a form of the word "know') Franks wife, so we have at least THAT common ground. We do share a love of vibrating umm, uh, nevermind. Am I talking too much?

4. You are a self-confessed microphone freak, would you give us a list of the mics and all recording equipment that you are proud to own ?

A COMPLETE list? Damn, I'll name a few of my favorites.... I really like Sennheiser anything, and have mostly Sennheiser mics.. I have a pair or MD-441's, the most expensive dynamic mics of time, an MD-421-U-5, MD409, e609 Black, e609 Silver, some e604 tom mics, e602 kick mics... I have a couple Beyerdynamics (my other favorite) but not many of those. My primary vocal mic for most people is a Soundeluxe ifet7, a VERY nice mic indeed. I also have some AKG's. My primary mic preamps as of now are a pair of Great River NV's which are based on old Neve circuits with newer electronics. I would have 20 channels of these if I could afford them, but at $2200 for the 2 channel version, I don't see that happening very soon. Only had it for a week now and the difference is very apparent. Cant wait to track a band with it. Heavy guitars kill through it.

5. You don't think much of the Shure SM57 or SM58 as good vocal mics. What best describes your feelings about the SM58 mic....

1.) It is a good durable "live" mic, not meant for recording for sure.
2.) There are many better mics out today that blow the SM58 away.
3.) The SM58 is too nasally sounding for a vocal mic, and the SM57 might make some girl a nice sex toy, other than that it should only be used for guitar cabs and snare drums.

I think its over rated. Sure it works, its a mic, it passes signal to the next place in the chain, but to me they sound boxy and nasally in COMPARISON to a GOOD mic. I have one. Rarely use it. Out of the list below that you made, I would say all three of them and then some. Its durable for sure. Its just not for me. Bring on the flame war!

6. What famous record producer would you like to hang out with for an entire recording session, to learn recording techniques, see what equipment they prefer, and maybe hit a few strip clubs with at the end of the sessions ?

Hmmm, that's a hard one. Rick Rubin, maybe. Andy Wallace for sure if I could sit through a mix. George Massenburg or Roger Nichols, just for the sheer amount of knowledge I could walk away with. Just so many great guys (and girls, Emily Lazar being one of them, or the chick the recorded the 1st full length Tool album, the one with Sober on it) that I would love to co-engineer, or master, with. Would be very nice indeed. Rick would be a good one for a lot of the stuff I record though, but I don't know how he is as a mixer. Hmmm.... OH, Rick Parashar too. He can get some tones. Brain Melting. Next question.

7. What is your 5 favorite CDs based mainly on production values ?

(Not answered yet)

8. I will list some bands and you rate them on a scale of 1-10. 10 being the
greatest, 1 being the worst kind of suck.

1.) MSD- Not intimately familiar, but what I have heard I say 8

2.) Metallica- Back then: 10 Now: -4

3.) MOV (My Own Victim)- 8, props

4.) Ketchup Stigmata- 8, not the tightest band in the world, but the material
was great. One of my favorite locals, and I find it sad they they are no more.
What a cool voice that dude has.

5.) East146- These guys have a chance at moving someplace, the material is good,
and they are pretty damn young. I give them an 8 too.

6.) Tool- C'mon man.... 10 one of my favs

7.) A Perfect Circle- 9, another of my favs, big Maynard fan

8.) Good Charlotte- 7

9.) Chevelle- 6 1/2

10.) Outspoken- 8, I still haven't heard the whole album yet. Shame on me. That
will be this week's goal, buying that album.

11.) Flaw- 7, but I was digging the demo stuff more than the national release,
personally. Looking forward to the next.

12.) Godsmack- 6, starting to get REAL repetitious

9. Time for the reality show scenario. You are chosen to be on a new reality
show. You will be on a deserted island for 90 days. You get to pick some people
to go with you. You will all get paid a grand a week, so here are some people
really wanting to go. Who goes and who better not.

1.) Travis Meeks- I understand he can be a little cryptic and hard to get along
with, but he would be very conducive to a creative atmosphere. I say yes. Plus
he is loaded so I can keep his $1000 for myself.

2.) Frank Green- Certainly. (note to Frank: bring Nic and Kenny's bass)

3.) Jessica (from Tornacade)- Don't know her. Donnie seems to think she's a good
choice, hahaha

4.) Mark Maxwell - Negative

5.) Mike Winbun - Fun guy, I say yes.

6.) Axl Rose - Ummm, hard to say... I wouldn't tell him no, but I wouldn't go
out of my way to get him there either.

7.) Asia Carrera - Who? :)

8.) David "E' Fraizer - Who?

9.) Dave Wathen - Ouch, two pimps on the same island. Hell yeah.

10.) Rachel Enriquez - Don't know her.

11.) Courtenay Penick - Another don't know her.

12.) Paris Hilton - She'd never find it anyway, fucking dingbat. Lord knows
she doesn't need the money. Maybe she could keep Axl busy when he starts
getting on my nerves.

10. What are your 5 favorite movies ?

Of all time or recently? Of all time:
Silence of the Lambs
Natural Born Killers
Pulp Fiction
Debbie does Dallas
The Stoned Age
LOTR 1 and 2 are killer recent ones. (LOTR ="Lord of the Rings" to all you non-dorks)

11. What band was the biggest pain to record, and what band was the most fun to record ?

Ummm, they are ALL a pain, heh... I enjoy the bands that have a sense of humor.
When I can walk in and ride on your mom and leave on good terms, then its all
good. Most recently the biggest pain has been Blyss, but only because they are
crazy enough to try to do 19 songs at the same time. Mixing is gonna be a
bitch.

12. Which song that you have recorded are you most proud of ?

It would have to be one of my own, as it would be my baby from start to finish, writing it,
arranging, recording it. Its a good feeling to hear something that took so much work and you did it all yourself.
Of another bands, I would have to say there are a couple on the new From Within that I am liking a lot, I think its going to turn out really well. The new Full Tilt stuff is starting to sound really good too. Those guys are an interesting bunch to say the least.

13. What are your pet peeves with bands that you record ? Is it out of tune guitars, worn-out drum heads, worn-out bass strings, singers that can't stay in key, or is there something worse ?

The main thing is when bands aren't ready to record yet. They don't know each others parts, and don't discover til midway through the 400th take of a song that the reason it doesn't sound right is because the bass player is in B, the guitar player is playing in F, and the other guy thinks its G. Then they commence to arguing about what key it is really in. That should have been worked out LONG before I showed up. Another thing is drummers that tap while getting levels, and then POUND as soon as we start tracking, meaning I gotta stop the song and start from scratch. ...Must... Not... Kill..... Drummer...
Impatience is a bad thing when you are recording, too. Take your time and get it right. The next step will come soon enough.

14. I will mention some people and you give your thoughts...

1.) Justin Zero- Talk to him often, met him, been to his house, Good guy by
most accounts.

2.) Rick Parashar- Would love to work with him, or just watch over his shoulder
for a few days. The man can get some tones.

3.) Frank Green- Frank gets lots of mentions here. I say hide the 12 speed
diesel powered sex toys when he's around.

4.) Teague Ridge- Don't know him, but he seems to try to help people out. Or at
least East146. Congrats to him on the whole Breckinridge thing.

5.) Andy Gumm- needs medication. :) Great guy.

6.) Jessica (Tornacade)- Donnie wants her. Nuff said.

7.) Travis Meeks- Donnie wants him too. Ha. Very creative guy, would love to
sit and jam and write with him for a few days.

8.) Rahul Borkar- Don't know him but have talked a few times via email. Very
energetic on stage. Seems to be a great talent.

9.) Dylan Rowe- In an effort to avoid drama, I avoid this one.

10.) Courtenay Penick- Might as well say Muhammed Buhabaleeve.

11.) Dave Wathen- Great drummer, great pimp, cool dude.

12.) Chris Stahl - (no answer yet)

15. What local band or musician would you most like to work with on a full-length cd?

I would like to work with Frank in the near future, and its not entirely impossible. I think it would be fun to work with After The Fall because of their vocal melodies, but it could get tricky real fast if they had any pitch problems that didn't announce themselves until recording. Live they sound great though. Silent Q of course, but they have Ivan, who is a GREAT guy by the way, props to Ivan, and his wonderful wife for sticking by a dedicated musician/PITA for over 10 years. That takes patience. Been trying to snatch up Month Of Sundaze for awhile because I think I could do well with them. That one might actually happen soon enough. Who knows, though. I feel pretty privileged to work with all of the bands this year that I've worked with. Very satisfied. Very fun.

16. What piece of recording equipment would you love to buy that you just can't?

An API mixing desk... for a full featured 32 channel desk you are looking at
over $100,000. All analog, all sweet.

17. What person in the 502 scene do you have the most respect for, and why?

Frank Green- for pursuing and attaining, and never giving up, even though he is over 55 now.
Ryan Murphy for sticking with it for so long, too, even if
it just meant working at a music store for 10 years (just like Frank). Terry
Harper for busting his ass to bring shows, create shows, and for just being a
great drummer in general. I think Eddie deserves some credit, too... he tries
and like everyone else, gets dogged for it and shit on a lot. Andy Foxx. Good job
to all these guys and everyone else that does what it takes. Props.

18. What local band is the most overrated, what band is underrated?

Well, saying a band is over-rated might get me in hot water or on bad terms,
and I HATE drama. As far as under-rated, of the bands I am intimately familiar
with, I would say Dump Gang. Most people around here just cant figure it out
or accept it. It IS some weird ass shit, but I love it. From Within would be
one of them, too, and Blyss may surprise some people pretty soon. I like
Breckinridge, but I think a lot of people tend to find them as over-rated.

19. Who has had the biggest influence on you as a person?

I would have to say my parents, and grandparents. Just for being together
still after all these years, persevering through the hardest of times, and always
coming out on top and still together and still respectable. My grandparents
have been married for over 50 years which just blows my mind.
They should be the trendsetters.

20. What one piece of advice would you give to a local band thinking about
recording a demo?

Be ready. Know your parts, and each other's parts as well. You would be
surprised how often in the middle of a session someone stops and says "why are
you going to E right there?" "I always have, dude" Work that shit out ahead
of time when its not costing you money. Practice it to where you are tight
tight tight and then some more. And that means with yourself, too. If you cant
double your part and make it sound like it wasn't doubled, then you need more
work on it. That, and don't spend a fortune. You don't need to or have to spend a
fortune to get a decent CD.

Let's recap...

Paul has recorded 17 bands different local bands this year. That's pretty impressive. He has been recording music for 10 years.

He has 662 post, but doesn't know who Courtenay Penick or Rachel Enriquez are. Courtenay is the Factor 9 message board moderator. (She has 1556 posts.) He also doesn't know who David "E" Fraizer is. (Singer for Outspoken.)

He also pretends to not know who Asia Carrera is. : )

Thanks Paul !

John Wells Interview from 2004

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I got a few requests from some girls that wanted an interview with John Wells, singer for MSD. John was nice enough to oblige, so here they are ::imagine eerie, gothic pipe-organ music here::...20 QUESTIONS WITH JOHN WELLS !

1. What is MSD up to these days ?

Mostly we've been writing new material for our next recording. If things go as planned, we should be back in studio by the end of winter.

2. What does MSD stand for, and how did you come up with the name ?

When I first began playing with Gote, Samual, and the forgotten drummer back in 1997, though they weren't really a band, they called themselves MSD. It didn't have any meaning, just three random letters that they picked. I didn't understand it then, nor do I know. Regardless, It stuck with us all the way through out the evolution of the band, until 2002 when we finally decided we had to give some sort of meaning behind it. After going through hundreds upon hundreds of name possibilities, we decided on Musica Silentis Doloris. Roughly translated from Latin, it means "Music to quiet the anguish" or "music to silence the sorrow". One of the aspects of Latin that I find very interesting is that it's very vague, so it can be taken in a lot of different ways.

3. Who inspired you to become a singer ? Who are your influences ?

I have so many singers that I love and admire, but I'd say some of my strongest and more obvious influences come from Glenn Danzig, Mike Patton of Faith No More, Phil from Pantera/Down, and the list goes on and on. However, Loreena McKennitt has always been my single greatest influence and inspiration, vocally and lyrically. I've always had an extreme passion for Celtic music, and no one does it better or more dramatically than Lareena.

4. What type of mic do you use live ? Is there any particular processor or effects that you like to sing through ?

I'm not picky at all. I practice with the SM58, on stage I usually just use whatever is in house (which is usually a 58). I just use it because it's the standard. As far as processing, I don't use it. If the house sound guy wants to throw in some reverb or delay somewhere, that's fine. I just sing.

5. What is the best show you have ever played and what was the worst ?

I don't think of any show as a "bad show". Sure, we've had our fair share of rough nights, but I'm appreciative for every opportunity we get to perform. I love what we do, and never take it for granted. Every time I get on stage, it's a blessing to me. No matter how it goes, I'm thankful for the experience.
One of my favorite shows, although not at all one of our largest, was when we played with the Misfits (with Marky Ramone, and Dez from Black Flag). The Misfits and Black Flag are two of the largest reasons I decided to start playing music in the first place. Jerry Only in particular (for being the driving force behind the Misfits) has always been someone I greatly respected and admired. At the show, Jerry offered me the opportunity to sing one of my favorite Misfits songs with them on stage. Actually performing with three icons that have had such a strong effect on not only myself, but the entire musical genre, was something that will stay with me for along time.

6. How long have you been singing, and were you in any bands before MSD ? If so what were those bands like in terms of style of music ?

I was in a few bands in high school. Back in 95, I played in a hardcore band called Entity for about a year and a half doing guitar and bass work. I'm still friends with the guys, and we get together and jam every now and then. The first band I ever sang for was a metal band, sort of along the lines of Pantera, called Primal. Ryan from Flaw was the guitarist and founding member of that project. It was short lived, but we had some good times. There was also Dead Machine, a dark industrial project. A guy named Justin Hall was the driving force behind that band. From what I hear he has a new project in the works, which is good news for the scene. I'd really like to see things work out for him. We shared a lot of great times, and I learned a lot form him.

7. As far as lyrics go, what song that you have written are you the most proud of ?

I'm deeply proud of the new stuff. I can't wait to get it into the public. It's very different for me, but very honest and very real.

8. What are 5 of your favorite CDs of all-time ?

Just from the top of my head I'd say...
Loreena McKennitt - "The Visit" or "Book of Secrets"
Danzig - "II Lucifuge"
Down - "NOLA"
Pink Floyd - "Pulse"
Faith No More - "The Real Thing" or "Angeldust"

9. The songs on your web site entermsd.com sound really good. Where were those songs recorded and who produced/engineered them ?

Thank you. The stuff on the website is really old, but it was all done at Canyon Studios by Chris Cassetta with some help from Ivan Arnold. Both guys are incredible. Both wonderful human beings, and an absolute joy to work with. I can't say enough nice things about either one of them.

10. You got a great spot to play at the recent "Attitude Fest" at Headliners. How did that show go and were you impressed with any other bands that played ?

Attitude Fest was a blast. Julie did such a great job piecing that gig together. All the bands were great of course. I know that's a very cliché thing for a musician to say after a show, but I really do mean it. Kallus blew me away. Those guys are intense and very powerful to watch. I love Engrind. That was my first time seeing them with Donnie, and he really works well with their sound. Cold Shovel really impressed me, very solid. False and JCDT (Faceplant) are two of my favorites, and they always rock. It was a great night from bottom to top, easily the most fun I've had at a show in a long time.

11. You have opened for several national acts, and even played at the first Summer Sanitarium tour (Metallica) What national act would you most like to do a long tour with ?

Danzig, without a moment of thought.

12. I will list some bands and you rate them on a scale of 1-10. 10 Being great, 1 being the worst.

I don't believe in saying a band is "better" than another band. As with any form of art, it's all a matter of individual preference. But as far as how the bands fare with my personal taste...

1.) Type O Negative - 7
2.) Misfits - 10
3.) Metallica - 10
4.) Pantera - 10
5.) Tool - 4 (I'm sure I'll be lynched for this. I fully appreciate their talent, but I just can't get into their music no matter how much I try.)
6.) Dimmu Borgir - 3
7.) Cradle of Filth - 3
8.) Hatebreed - 6 (Their vocals get redundant, but I love the riffs. It's good weight room music.)
9.) Danzig - 10
10.) Marilyn Manson - 6/7

13. When you aren't singing or going to the gym, what do you do ? Do you have a day job or do you go to school ?

I play a lot of guitar, and I've been trying to better myself at piano. I have a thousand different hobbies that I never really get to enjoy, due to my horrendously busy schedule .Of course I have a day job. I work at Ford. Let's face it. There isn't much money to be made as an unsigned band, however there are plenty of expenses that come along with it (equipment, studio time, merch, etc.), all in addition to living expenses. It would be nearly impossible to live comfortably off nothing but our band income.

14. What are your 5 favorite movies of all-time ?

LOTR- Fellowship of the Ring
LOTR- Two Towers
LOTR- Return of the King
(I read the books at a young age, and was very effected by them. Seeing them come to life and portrayed so beautifully was extremely powerful.)
BRAVEHEART
SNATCH

15. Who has had the biggest influence on you as a person?

Marcus, Gote, Samual, and Robie. We've been close friends longer than we've been band mates, and Marcus of course being my older brother, has been with me my entire life. Together we've experienced so much, learned so much from each other, and created so many wonderful memories. We've seen the lowest of times, but have always stuck together to overcome. I'd fight to the death for all of them.

16. What is the most money you have made for a single performance ?

I honestly don't know. None of it ever reaches our pockets. It all goes directly into the band account to go towards recording and merchandise.

17. You must fight Glen Danzig. Whoever wins that fight will fight the singer for Dimmu Borgir. The winner gets to have sex with Marilyn Monroe's corpse. Who would win ?

I'd have a hell of a height advantage over Glenn, but I still wouldn't stand a chance. I might be able to handle the Dimmu Borgir guy though. I probably wouldn't get involved to begin with. I'm not a violent guy, and I don't have any great desire for dead bodies.

18. Last of John Wells...

1.) Last cool famous person you have hung out with ?

A lot of WWE wrestlers visit my gym pretty frequently. Most of the Ohio Valley Wrestlers are members, and I work out with a few of them regularly. OVW is the minor leagues for WWE, so anytime a WWE superstar is in town working with OVW they end up in my gym. Just the other day I ran into Sean O'Haire. He used to be in OVW, and a regular at the gym before he got signed to WWE. He's a good guy.

2.) Last girl you have thought about having sex with ?

Marilyn Monroe's corpse, but that's your fault.

3.) Last time you shaved your arms ?

Never. My arms aren't very hairy. I keep my torso pretty clean though, usually once or twice a week.

4.) Last really good meal you have had ?

Thanksgiving. I follow an extremely strict diet through out the entire year, so I take full advantage of holidays. They give me good excuse to eat until it hurts, and not worry about counting nutrients.

5.) Last time you signed an autograph ?

Yesterday. I was Christmas shopping at the mall, and a couple of kids approached me for autographs. They were really excited to seeing me out in the world and not in a "show" atmosphere, but I'm sure I looked really bad ass with all my bags from the Disney store and The Gap.

19. What person or band in the 502 scene deserve the most
success and why ?

MOST of the bands in the city work very hard, and deserve national recognition. I'd love to see My Own Victim get another shot in the mainstream. They're just too damn good to be grounded in Louisville forever. I'd especially like to see Sailor make it. He's so incredibly talented, and has such an immense passion for music. I hope he gets his chance to share it with the world.

20. Do you believe in Christmas, what are your thoughts
about the holiday ?

I absolutely love Christmas. I'm the type of guy that really gets into the holidays. I love shopping for my family and friends, putting up decorations, even watching all the stupid Christmas specials that come on TV. It's just a very happy season. I get really excited about it months before hand. I'm a big kid like that.

Let's recap...

John told us that MSD has been the name of their band since '97, but the letters didn't actually stand for anything until 4 or 5 years later. In 2002, they decided it would stand for Musica Silentis Doloris.

His favorite band to tour with would be Danzig.

He is a big fan of LOTR movies and has read the books.

He also loves Christmas.

John had some great things to say about his band mates, and many great things to say about other people in the 502 scene. I think this interview has been the most positive so far. Great interview !

Thanks John Wells !

John gets 5 out of 5 stars for his 20 Question Interview. êêêêê

Chris Stahl Interview from 2004

Chris Stahl of the band East 146 was quick to reply when I asked him to do 20 Questions, plus I thought I might could get him into trouble with his girlfriend, so here goes nothin'...

1. When did East 146 form and what is the first song you played together ?

October 2001. Devin (our drummer) and I were in a previous band where I was not the singer. We weren't really happy with how it was going and we had just ordered a p.a. system. Our fall break was just starting and my parents were leaving for Florida for a week so we told the other 2 members in the band (the singer and bass player) that I was going to Florida with my parents, even though I wasn't and we got Chris Cross (our rhythm guitarist now) to play bass, making us a trio. The 2nd day, we wrote our first song "Don't Leave" which is on our current mp3.com site to download. It's the 5th time we recorded it. It was the first song we played.

2. Where are you going to college and what degree are you going for ?

I attend JCC in Shelbyville. was accepted to Bellarmine and Middle Tennessee State University to pursue a music business or music technology degree but I stayed @ home to 1st pursue a music career. its worth every second. I'm only 18 and I have time to make a mistake, or make the greatest choice of my life. At JCC I'm just taking classes to stay on parents health insurance and getting core classes out of the way. I'd like to be an entertainment attorney though.

3. What inspired you to play guitar and and who are your influences ?

Well, I wouldn't be playing guitar if my grandmother didn't bring my grandfather's acoustic guitar to my house during Easter when I was 12. As for influences, I always loved The Offspring and I thought how cool it would be to play guitar. The first song I learned all the way through, I think was, " Kid's Aren't Alright" off The Offspring's "Americana" album. I like their old stuff mostly though. My dad is a musician too. He played guitar too... (sold his 59' gold top Les Paul for 300 bucks to buy a keyboard when he was 18. Arg !!!). So, I guess my parents and just bands I listened to. I have 2 older sisters, One is 33 and lives in Manhattan, and the other is 24 and lives in Nashville, and they wouldn't let me listen to anything dumb. I listened to Green Day, Offspring, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Gin Blossoms, the band that had that song "I'm Going to Disney Land" ha ha (Da Da) I think. So those are my influences.

4. You have a new bass player. What happened to the old one ?

Our old bass player just wasn't able to support our growth as a band. Various comments he would make that showed his lack of dedication. Not helping out financially (a band is a business). that's really about it.

5. Would you give us a run-down of your gear ?

My first electric was a usa fender strat which i played forever. Then when Teague started working with us he had me play a les paul in the studio and i loved it so i went and bought a white les paul studio. I still have my strat and I have a black epiphone les paul covered in stickers as a backup. I have never played it live yet. I'd like to get an SG Standard though after playing Rahul's of Breckinridge. My first amp was a Line 6 Spyder series combo which was great but wasn't powerful enough so I up'ed to a Single rectifier which our other guitarist uses now. I use a 3-channel Dual rectifier through the mesa 4x12 recitifer cab. I haven't gotten into effects yet though I might experiment. I use AKG Airbug wireless system as well.

6. Have you ever worked a part-time job and if so, where ?

A lumber yard for 2 summers and Kroger. I live on a farm so the past 3 months my grandfather hired our band to work on the farm cleaning it up for 9 bucks an hour, whenever we wanted to work.

7. I will list some bands and you rank them from 1 - 10. 1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest.

5.) Wrote a song that sounds like a Blink 182 song ? Ah we had one called "I'll see you soon" It was insanely fast. We don't play it anymore but I like to think if we wrote a song that sounded like a Blink 182 song we would not be writing at our full potential so I'd say I haven't.

6.) Asked Teague Ridge to buy you beer ? Don't Drink/Do Drugs so Never.

7.) Looked at Teague's girlfriend's boobs for more than two seconds without stopping ? Ex and Current... Hah

6.) Travis Barker - Met him, Very nice, amazing drummer and musician.

11.) Chris Cross - Yes.

12.) Chris Kattan - YES.

11. Not including your girlfriend, who is the hottest girl in the 502 scene ? Hah... see Question 8 (# 7) Which was... 7.) Looked at Teague's girlfriend's boobs for more than two seconds without stopping ? Ex and Current... Hah

12. What band would you most like to play guitar with for one tour ? I played Guitar with the Ataris for one song @ the 2003 Cincinnati Warped tour. It was amazing, so... The Ataris. I'd Like to see East 146 do a tour and I hope I'd be playing guitar for them too :)

13. Your guitarist goes by the name Chris Cross. Did his parents really name him Chris Cross ? Were they fans of the singer Christopher Cross who sang the 70s hits "Ride Like The Wind" and "Sailing" ? Yes his name is Christopher Wayne Cross. I don't know if they knew what they were doing. Hell my parents named me after an expensive champagne hah. Crystal.

14. Speaking of Christopher Cross and famous people, are you related or have any ties to anyone really famous ? My uncle managed Tim McGraw for about 6 years, that is my only claim to famous relations. My Great great great grandmothers sister was Abraham Lincoln's mom so that would make him a very close cousin. My dad was asked to play keyboard for Billy Dean, a country star in the past that had hits like Billy the Kid. That's about it.

Then he added this, which is really cool...

Believe it or not, but one of our new bass player's friends went on a cruise several years ago and she and 1 other girl her age was on the boat. That other girl happens to be Hillary Duff or Lizzie McGuire. They became good friends and kept in touch. Nathan's friend told Nathan she wanted him to meet somebody so they got on the phone line and did a 3-way thing and dialed a number and a man answered who asked 3 off the wall questions and Nathan's friend gave 3 off the wall answers and he put them through to Hillary Duff. Nathan didn't believe it, so Hillary said to turn on Disney Channel and she talked along with the Lizzie McGuire show for several scenes and then told Nathan to go to her website which she has some control over and at the bottom she added a text that said "hi nathan" then deleted it. She loves our song "Unopened Letters" and said depending on copyrights and that sort of stuff she can possibly have it playing in her CD player during a scene on the show or if we send her a poster of our band she can put it in her room. How cool is that.

15. I forgot two questions, so I caught Chris online before he signed off and added the next two questions, here is the post directly from our online conversation...

KevinClarkHarley [1:11 AM]: ok, you are recording in LA and meet Dave Navarro, he thinks you are super cool and asks you to be in his newest video which they are filming the next day...
KevinClarkHarley [1:12 AM]: nah, scratch that question
East 146 Band [1:12 AM]: hah
KevinClarkHarley [1:13 AM]: nah lets go on with it
KevinClarkHarley [1:13 AM]: you get to play guitar in one scene
KevinClarkHarley [1:14 AM]: but in one scene the director asks you to do a make-out scene with Jennifer Love Hewitt (Jennifer Love Hewitt from Heartbreakers)
KevinClarkHarley [1:14 AM]: you know your girlfriend will see it, and its a long kiss that will take a couple of hours to shoot, will you do it or pass ? you still get to be in the video if you say no
East 146 Band [1:15 AM]: am i getting paid for the video
KevinClarkHarley [1:15 AM]: yeah, sure
KevinClarkHarley [1:16 AM]: and get a free guitar, les paul
East 146 Band [1:16 AM]: Yeah, my girlfriend is understanding
East 146 Band [1:16 AM]: your trying to get me in trouble hahahah
KevinClarkHarley [1:16 AM]: hey its just a question
KevinClarkHarley [1:17 AM]: hypothetical one anyways right ? right !

16. Next question...

KevinClarkHarley [1:27 AM]: You are on a cruise ship with your band, Chris Cross comes up and says...
KevinClarkHarley [1:27 AM]: "Man, Chris you are gonna freak out when I tell you what hott celebrity babe is on this ship with us"
KevinClarkHarley [1:28 AM]: your girlfriend isn't on the ship. What girl do you really hope its NOT, cause you might get into trouble ?
East 146 Band [1:28 AM]: Kate Beckinsale
KevinClarkHarley [1:28 AM]: who is that ?
East 146 Band [1:28 AM]: serendipity
KevinClarkHarley [1:29 AM]: oh ok
East 146 Band [1:29 AM]: her accent
East 146 Band [1:29 AM]: its killer
East 146 Band [1:29 AM]: make sure you add that
East 146 Band [1:29 AM]: hah

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's recap...

Chris likes chick flicks and his favorite actor is John Cusack. He has a girlfriend, but would make-out with Jennifer Love Hewitt in a music video if he was asked to. He also would probably say yes to making out with Kate Beckinsale (From the chick flick "Serendipity"). He has admired the chests of two of Teague Ridge's girlfriends. (ex and current). Not including his own girlfriend, he also thinks one of them is the hottest chick in the 502.

He has seen BJ Abner naked.

Chris did a great job and stayed up to help me finish the last 2 questions. He risked getting in trouble with his girlfriend for the sake of being honest.

Thanks Chris !

I give Chris 5 out of 5 stars. êêêêê

Billy Walker Interview from 2003

Since the band PUC just announced that they are splitting up, their bass player Billy Walker seemed like a good person to do the next interview with, so without further ado, ...

1. Just the other day you announced that your band, PUC is splitting up, then Phrail announces that they are no longer a band. Then the rumors surface that you and Nathan from Phrail have a new band in the works. As the SNL church lady would say "Now, isn't that convenient ?" What really happened to PUC and what is going on with this new project ?

Wow, Ok I can see there will be no punches pulled on this, lol,,,,,,Yes It’s true, Brian and me are In talks with Nathan from Phrail and are in the process of rehearsing,,,,Nathan is a very talented vocalist and we are very excited,,,,,,As far as PUC,,,,I believe we were a great band,,,there is a lot more talented bands in this scene,, but we really had fun and loved what we did….we just all had creative differences, and decided it was time to go our own ways,,,,There was so much chemistry between Brian and me,,plus we are best friends,,,we decided we were gonna keep going and do what we love to do….so everyone keep on the lookout,,,,good things coming soon,oh yea, lol,,,,you can also see me and Brian in our new cover band,,,lol,That’s right,,,,show dates will be realeased October the 12th……

Let's recap...

Billy has seen BJ Abner naked. Thinks that Brian's girlfriend, Sarah, is the hottest chick in the 502. He also owns a Nelly Cd, and has read "Women are from Venus, Men are from Mars". After reading that book, he still had to sleep on the couch last night.

I don't think Billy dodged any questions. Considering that he is married and he had to comment on hot chicks and all that, I gotta give him 5 out of 5 stars. Hope you aren't sleeping on the couch again for this.

Thanks Billy !
I give Billy 5 out of 5 stars for his 20 Question interview. êêêêê

Mike Winbun Interview from 2004

Mike Winbun from the band Ketchup-Stigmata is pretty well-known on the Factor 9 Message Board. He is known as fhqwhgads-panda (He has over 4,800 posts). He is pretty witty for a high school kid, so ....

1. You played bass for Ketchup-Stigmata, but the band seems to be broken-up
or you just decided you weren't interested in being in a band. What is the
situation with Ketchup-Stigmata right now ?

well as of now, everyone has kinda parted ways for awhile. when the band
broke up i hadnt seen any of the guys for quite awhile, being that kyle went
to college, nick goes to ballard, and rob and dustin both went off to north
oldham. i see dustin now every other day or so at my vocational school, hang
out with rob on the weekends sometimes, and see nick up at my work every so
often. kyle i havent seen for a while, last time i saw him was at the subway
by oldham county high school one afternoon. everybody in the band is still
cool with each other, we just dont see each other that often. oh and the
guys are thinking of starting another thing up, i will keep everyone updated
with that as soon as we decide what we're gonna do as far as putting another
band together.

2. Are you still on good terms with the other guys that were in K-S with
you ?

yes, as i said earlier we're all still cool with each other, as a matter of
fact i chilled with rob and a few other friends just this weekend, the
others i see occasionally, and as for kyle i haven't seen him in quite a
while but we still are cool and talk on AIM every once in a while.

3. Who are some of your favorite bands ?

hopesfall, transplants, reel big fish, glassjaw, thrice, mars volta, just to
name a few

4. What was the most fun gig you played with K-S and which was the worst ?

i would say the most fun i had at a gig was the show we played with flaw at
tek world. there was just so many people at that show, actually that was
the most people at any show weve played, there was so much energy, and i
was still surprised at the fact that people were digging our stuff. as far
as worst show, i wouldn't say it wasn't fun or anything, but our first show
with full-tilt( called soma back then) at this park in indiana. it was fun
as hell to play there, but as a band back then we were just not together
nor ready for playing shows. we actually ran through our entire set before
we did the show just because we were skeptical of whether we were ready or
not. also, i broke my E string during a cover of weezer's "say it ain't so"
at that show, which wasn't very cool. i ended up borrowing
morgans(ex-east146) bass, but as any bassist can tell you, the E string is
the WORST string to break, especially during a gig.

5. Who is your favorite bass player ?

without a doubt stu hamm. the guy is just amazing, i have a video of him
playing the Moonlight Sonata, and he is tapping out 3 different parts at the
same time, the bass line with his left and the two melodies with his right.
i know there are lots of people out there that can do crazy slap lines, tap
fast as hell, but it takes a hell of a good musician to play 3 different
things at once. that man just amazes me.

6. What are your 5 favorite CDs of all time ?

thrice- artist in the ambulance
reel big fish- why do they rock so hard?
mars volta- whatever the hell there newest CD is called
NOFX- pump up the valuum
hopesfall- the satellite years

7. What girl in the 502 would you like to lose your virginity to ?

well, a lot of them, but, not really any of them. lol, i guess what i mean
is i'd like to lose my virginity to someone that i can have a good
relationship with, not just some random whore. ive met quite a few girls who
i believe i could have a relationship like that with, but so far none have
felt the same way back. all i can do is wait for the right one......

8. You win a 10 day cruise for yourself and 5 other people. What 5 people
would you ask to go on the cruise with you ?

oh this one is easy :)

kenny cash- my best friend since 5th grade. overall good guy, funny as hell
at times, he'd probably the person i hang out with most during the cruise,
probably go with him to mess with the driver of the ship and such lol

jason emge- if kenny goes jay has to go, the guy loves asians, and i wouldn't
want to deprive him of kenny's presence

joel not-gonna-say-his-last-name (a.k.a. dildo)- the kid is funny as hell,
hangs with us big kids and he's only 14, so you know he's a hardass right
there. also for you coke heads out there this kid can get the best coke in
louisville, some kind of peruvian stuff or somethin. did i mention he's 14?

alex ward- he'd be the entertainment. good friend of mine from high school,
literally the funniest man i have ever met.

amanda hulvey- this thing was beginning to turn into a sausage-fest so i had
to throw in a female, and amanda is probably one of the nicest/coolest
chicks at my school. ahh with all these people we'd some high times :) (pun
intended)

9. What local band is the most underrated, which is the most over-rated?

as far as under-rated, i'd say a band called The Other Side would fit there. i
haven't seen them playing much shows, but these guys are ridiculously good.
after the panic and valley are two more bands that are the same way. I
wouldn't really say there are any over-rated bands locally, because the
bands here locally that are big, are big for a reason. they work their
asses off doing shows and writing and stuff like that and in return they
get what they worked for....a following. i don't really get why some people
talk shit about some bands like breckinridge or MSD, because there can only
be two reasons why your band isnt just as successful....1. your not working
as hard as them to get your name out, or 2. your band just isn't ready,
practice more.

10. How long have you been playing bass and what kind of equipment do you
use?

i've been playing bass about 2 and a half years, maybe 3. i don't really
know, its at least 2.5 though lol. my equipment, i have a fender squier 5
string p. bass with jazz pickups, a 4 string sammick something or other (which
belongs to rob, who sang for ketchup stigmata), and i play through a hartke
transporter 4x10 cab. my bass head is a SWR workingman 4004, 400W. i also
have a zoom bfx70somethin bass pedal, which has a lot of nifty effects, but
i mainly use it to tune up for gigs and rehearsals.

11. I will list some bands and you rate them on talent. 10 being the most
talented and 1 being not talented at all.
1.) Nirvana-7
2.) Good Charlotte-2
3.) Pink FLoyd-10
4.) Metallica-5
5.) Pearl Jam-8
6.) Kid Rock-0
7.) Slipknot-7
8.) Audio Slave-6
9.) Smashing Pumpkins-8
10.) Limp Bizkit-2(only reason they get a 2 is because of 3 dollar bill)

12. You get free passes to King's Island. You can take one girl, who would
you most like to go with you ?

there are a bunch i wouldn't mind taking, but probably i would end up taking
my friend kelly middaugh. i haven't seen her in a long ass time since she
went to college in MI, and i didn't even get to say goodbye or anything. miss
her big time, that'd be a great way to catch up on things with her.

13. What is the wildest thing you have done in the past year ?

hmm this is a tough one, im lazy, so i dont do much. hmm....over the summer my insomnia acted up huge and i didnt sleep for almost 6 days straight(5 days and 18 hrs i think it was), i bashed my friends mailbox by throwing a pumpkin from a car goin 60mph(tore the thing completely out of the ground, post and all.), i broke rob's windshield by punching it, once, ummm thats it i guess im pretty boring.

14. What are your favorites...
1.) Favorite Food - anything rally's
2.) Favorite Movie - american history X
3.) Favorite Bass Guitar - a warwick thumb, 5 string made out of ovangkol
4.) Favorite Band - thrice
5.) Favorite Local Band - hallowtide or EE9
6.) Favorite Actress - cameron diaz(she's REAL hot)
7.) Favorite Actor - Edward Norton (the undisputed badass)

15. What person in the 502 scene do you have the most respect for and why ?

depends on what we're talking about. as far as musicianship i have to go with joey, xmember of factorIX. he is a badass at bass, and i can only wish i was that friggin good, lol. as far as helping out the "scene" (bleh i hate calling it that) i would say shawn (cbass), julie, other shawn (bigguyatshows), and the people at the radio stations, all the people that do what they can to promote louisville music and make it a nice place for bands to play and for people to see shows.

16. Who has had the biggest influence on you as a person ?

as much as i dislike(hate is too strong a word lol) the guy, i have to say my father. we get into arguments all the damn time, can never agree on anything, and i get yelled at for this and that, but through all that i think i am mature enough to realize why he does all that, is because he wants me to have a good life and do whats best for myself. i really hate admitting it but he has taught me a lot, especially in the past few years. the only thing i wish is if he could go about these "life lessons" a little bit nicer, lol.

17. What would be the best Christmas present you could receive this year ?

an apartment from my parents, in my name, with the first 6-12 months rent already paid. of course that wont happen, but it'd be pretty damn cool to have a free apartment for half a year or so to get on my feet out there.

18. Has a woman ever really done you wrong ? If so, who was she and what did she do ?

nope, well actually yes. see i've been single for 17 years, so every woman out there that is single is doing me wrong right now.

19. If you could hang out for an entire day with someone famous, who would it be and what would you do ?

definitely stu hamm, and we'd probably just chill at a music store somewhere all day playin the basses, or mostly me watching him play. id probably ask him a lot about how he got so good, what and when he practices, stuff like that. maybe ask him to teach me some exercises to slap faster or something. then we'd finish it off by eating at rally's, because rally's is awesome.

20. What sucks more...

1.) Working at McDonalds
2.) Working at Meijer
3.) Being a teenager and having to drive a Lincoln Continental

I would say working at McDonalds sucked the most, its just a job that nobody wants to do, and the pay is barely above minimum wage, screw that. Meiers on the other hand, also a little bit above minimum wage, but its fun as hell because my friends work there, there's a lot of cool people that work up there i've met, and the bosses aren't dicks like they are at mcdonalds. and as for the lincoln, that car is a BADASS, leather seats, climate control, air ride, reclining chairs, HUGE trunk, and it has F.O.P stickers on it, a good deterrent for those pesky 5-0. i wouldnt trade my car for anything in the world, except maybe a brand new lincoln Mark VII, those things are clean as hell

This is a a question I forgot to ask and lots of people want to know...WHERE DID YOU GUYS GET THE NAME KETCHUP-STIGMATA ??

haha the "dreaded" question EVERYONE asks lol. anyways, its a short and dumb story, but rob was sittin at lunch with halley and one of them spilled ketchup on on of theirselves wrists(i dunno who did what) and rob exclaimed "Ketchup Stigmata!!!" shortly after he decided it'd be a cool name for a band, and the rest of us agreed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Van Avery Interview from 2004

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Van Avery has been on the most requested list for a while, so here are 20 Questions with Van Avery !!!

1. What have you been up to lately ? Any plans for summer ?

Well Ive been working kinda hard on getting this new band i'm in with jay daunt. Try'n to get things going and some songs recorded. Really that's my main focus right now, that and working on my camaro like crazy.

2. You sing for Incursion 502 and you also play bass in other bands, who were your first musical influences ?

Vocal wise it was max cavelera, phil anslemo, and dez from coal chamber. I always liked that mid ranged voice and as for my screams I have no idea how the hell or where in the hell those came from. Bass I know I was in a band who needed a bass player so I said what the hell Ill play. Then I started really getting into the bass and enjoyed playing it more and more. I guess those who influence me the most on the bass would be ryan from mudvayne, les claypool, and victor wooten.

3. What was the name of your first band and what style of music did you play ?

the first band I was ever in was Incursion502

4. If you got the chance to go on tour with any band you wanted, who would it be and why ?

hmmm prolly kittie, I went on tour with flaw and those girls where on the tour. I got to get pretty close to them girls and good friends with 'em. I had a good time hanging with them so I guess I would have to say them. If you wanted someone I haven't been on tour with I guess I would say the ozzfest tour. why??? hell its fucking ozzfest multiple bands and a fucking party every goddamn night.

5. Last of Van Avery...

1.) Last book you read ? Motley Crue Biography.

2.) Last good movie you have seen ? Van Hellsing.

3. ) Last good concert you have seen ? Skinlab in Chicago ( they kidnapped me and took me with em for the rest of the tour)

4.) Last time you were really drunk ? Last Incursion show at Pappy's I don't remember that night very well.

6. Who is the absolute coolest person in the 502 scene ?

Its a toss up from the Kallus guys or Sailor from MOV.

7. In the last six months has Van Avery...
1.) Gotten into a fight ? Yes at pappy's one of our shows some mexican grabs like three of my friends ass' so I questioned him about it he got smart so I tried my hardest to rip his head off but I must say stretch and a few other people are not so easy to get past. I should have played nice walked up all calm then ripped his head off, But Ill remember that next time.

2.) Smoked a joint while driving a Camaro on the Outer Loop ? I don't smoke weed.

3.) Bought new bass strings ? Yep like 4 new pair in the last month, warwicks suck tryin' to find the right string for.

5.) Shopped at Liquor Outlet ? nope but I might have liked her....uh nevermind

8. Rate the following bands on a scale of 1-10. 1 being the worst, 10 being the best.

1.) Marilyn Manson - 5

2.) Misfits - 7

3.) Soil - 3

4.) Iron Maiden - 2

5.) Slayer - 8

6.) MSD - 8

7.) Korn - 2

8.) Slipknot - 9

9.) Tool - 9

10.) Guns and Roses - 5

11.) Pantera - 10

12.) Flaw - 7

9. If you could hang out with any one person for an entire day, who would it be and what would you do ?

That would be my parents, I know its more than one person but If I couldn't hang with them then I wouldn't hang with anyone. I would wanna hang with my parents one more time to get the chance to let them know what an inspiration they where on my life. How much I appreciate everything they have ever done for me. I really never got the chance to tell them that before they died and to say the least that has killed me ever since they passed away. There are no other people on this entire planet that I respect more than them and I would really just like to have that one extra chance to let them know that and that when I achieve my goals in life it was because of them that I strived so hard.

10. One day soon, you record a cd for a major label and it sells like crazy. You make more than a million dollars after taxes. You tour for a year and a half and come back to Louisville for a 3 month break before you begin recording the next cd. What will you do, and what would you buy with the money you have made ?

Well first off Ill will pay off my house that's a must. Then i would say I would work on getting a studio built so I can start recording bands for my new record label I would be putting together. That for sure is one dream of mine to get a label going for all the bands. Some labels are to fucking scared to even touch a heavy band any more. Like here in louisville there is so much talent but some labels are to pussied to actually take the time and money and work with a heavy band. If I get singed and if it hasnt happened yet you can bet louisville will be put on the map from a shit load of bands getting signed.
11. What is the best show you have ever played and what is the worst ?

Woof that's a hard one, well I guess the best show I have ever played would have to be the factor 9 cd release show a while back. That's the one i remember the most. Tek world was friggen packed. The crowd went insane that night. Prolly one of the best nights I remember and one of the last shows I remember when kenny was in the band had a fucking blast that night. Now the worst show.......That would have to be any show any of us are drunk. You cant play a good show when your minds not in the game, and well some times when your set to play at 3 in the morning the beer seems to get ya every once in a while but o well that's fucking metal and that's what its all aboot CHAOS.

12. Who is the most underrated band in the 502 scene. What band is the most overrated ?

the most underrated would probably have to be jefferson county drunk tank. Them are some talented mother fuckers but I would notice alot of people dont really give them the props they deserve, either them or in the clear they fucking throw, the most over rated band Hell I don't know no one is really over rated that I know of pretty much there needs to be more hype about alot of the bands in louisville that's the only problem with this scene is people bad mouthing other bands and we really need to lose that type of negativity really. I wont lie there are some bands in this scene that I think aren't very good but that's my opinion and something I just don't really talk about. I mean if you ask me about a band Ill tell you how I honestly think about em.
13. What are your 5 favorite cds of all time ?

Coal Chamber (self titled)

Everything by Hatebreed

Everything by Pantera

Everything by Skinlab

Super Joint Ritual (first one)

14. What are your 5 favorite movies of all time ?
The Green Mile

Nightbreed

Young Guns (one and two)

X Men (one and two)

Ok this one counts as one since its all from the same director and writer Kevin Smith...

Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Highway

and for a lil added bonus of my favs ever thing from matt and trey from south park.

15. Who are some of the famous people you have met ? Who was cool and who was not so cool ?

oof I've met tons of people from touring with flaw and touring with skinlab on the super joint ritual tour. Uh The girls and guy from kittie are fucking awesome they where really fucking cool to me and stuck up for me when some people I will not name tried to get me kicked off the tour the girls in kittie made sure I wasn't going anywhere so that should let ya know how fucking cool they are. Th e guys in skinlab are my fucking family now man So much snake from sl tattooed a sl for skinlab family on me steve and jeff from kittie so those guys are always family to me now. Uh met dino from fear factory that dudes a trip. Uh everyone in superjoint fucking rules those guys are super fucking nice 'cept for the heroin junkie piece of shit phil. I was on tour with them for almost 3 weeks and I saw that guy maybe twice the whole tour hanging out. I watched him run to his tour bus in the fucking freezing rain told some fans wait here ill be right back and let them sit outside for like 2 hours. Those kids helped pay for that fat ass tour bus he was chillin in. Even his own crew said he was fucking wrong for how he treated his fans. O and zack wyld that dood is fucking awesome too him and shawn (clown) from slipknot he's a real down to earth mother fucker hung out with us all night real cool guy. So pretty much everyone I met was fucking cool 'cept phil the dick anselmo o and guy sykes is a prick too. BOOT TO THE KOOL

16. Here is a scenario question for you. You have to put a band together choosing from the list of other people I have done 20 Questions with. You will get paid well to record at least one cd and do one tour with this band. Who do you choose ?

Donnie Hardin, Kevin McCreery, Frank Green, Dave Wathen, my band would fucking rule!!!!!!!!!!!

17. Coming soon !

18. What's the best thing about being a musician in the 502 scene, what is the worst thing about it ?

The best thing about it really is just having the chance to play in a band period. I mean this is my lifestyle this is the life I have chosen for my self and nothing else will suffice. If I don't make it in a band I die end of story. The worst part about playing in this scene would for sure be the Haters the fucks who have nothing better to do than run their mouth about this scene and the bands in it just because they aren't good enough to do anything with their lives.

19. What is a typical day like for you these days ?

this ones easy, wake up If i work that day go to work get off come home either practice or get on the computer and start working on websites. If Its a nice day out I'm in the garage working on my car. that's pretty much my same ole game plan day after day.

20. What advice would you give to bands just starting out in the 502 scene ?

This here is the best advice I could give. Do your work, This shit isn't start day one then day two your big rock stars. Don't expect to be treated like kings if your just starting out. We Incursion502 have busted our balls for years in this scene to get where we think is a comfort level. A lot of bands in this scene have worked their ass' off to get where they are and that's what it all takes hard work. For god sakes don't give up just because things don't go right. Trust me if anyone in this scene has had bad shit happen to them You can fucking bet Incursion502 has had the worst out of any fucking band LOL, But ya can't give up ya gotta keep working as well as work with other bands. Bonds keep this scene together. Just get ready to do your share of show after show where you open or get stuck in shitty time slots cuz that's what every band endures and eventually over time (not a short time either) things will start to fucking rock and shit will go great for ya if ya just keep going and keep that head up. O yeah take shit from no one.

O yeah and donnie hardin like to dress in drag.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's recap...

Thanks to Van for being patient. This took longer than most, but turned out really well. I will post the question and answer for 17, and a full recap very soon !

Dave Wathen Interview from 2003

Dave Wathen gets the honor of being the first to do "20 Questions". Since this is the Factor 9 Board and he was their drummer, seems like a great choice. (Plus, he is the first to volunteer.) These questions are in the same style as found at metal-sludge.com. All these questions are in good fun, and shouldn't be taken too seriously.

1. What is Dave Wathen doing these days ? This is your chance to promote whatever you have going on.

Well I am staying pretty busy these days, go to school full time at U of L 3 times a week, Working part time 3rd shift at UPS where I have been the last 6yrs of my life, playing music, being a "pimp" foshizzle my nizzle hahaha, and recording bands which is about to end for awhile when I move into my new house until a nice practice room gets built out away from the house. Also right now drumming for ENGRIND and I have something else going on that I'm not really gonna say much about right now.

2. What local bands do you enjoy watching live?

Hmm lets see Incursion502, Wasted Dayz, PUC (but they just broke up), DownSix (haven't played a show yet but they are my boys and I see em practice a lot), The Lost (if they are still around), Execrate, Jefferson County Drunk Tank (always a fun band to watch live), MSD (back when they had the crazy stage show going on) man their are so many more but hell I'm brain dead right now so I can't think of em all, but you know who ya are.

3. What local cds do you listen to ?

Not really many usually just the bands that I record so I can listen to what a shitty job I've done on the recording lol and be like damn wish I woulda done this or that better/different.

4. Name 3 famous people you would like to meet and why ?

Hmm Danny Carey/Neil Peart/Dave Weckl what more can I say? Everyone should know why I'd like to meet these guys.

5. "The last of Dave Wathen "...
Last book you read ? hahaha are u kidding? to much work for me, do school books count?
Last movie you saw ? Jesus can't remember I'm not big into movies
Last restaurant you have visited ? Texas Roadhouse best steaks/rolls in town if u ask me.
Last CD you listened to ? The first Pulse Ultra CD
Last TV show you made a point to watch ? COPS

6. Lets say you go do some studio work for a local band that just got signed. Their drummer is recovering from a broken arm and will rejoin the group. The producer is really impressed with your playing and says he will do whatever he can to get you on a major tour. A month later he calls and says "OK, I have two offers for you. Superjoint Ritual is doing a tour and needs a drummer. They will probably keep you on as a permanent band member. The pay is 350 per week. The other offer is: Britney Spears is going on tour and needs a replacement drummer for about 8 weeks. When the 8 weeks are up, the regular drummer will rejoin the tour and you will be done. The pay is 650 per week, all meals paid, and you will stay at the nicest hotels." You have to answer quick because both tours start within a couple of weeks. Britney or Superjoint ?

I would have to say Britney Spears tour isn't as long and money is better I'd be living like a PIMP LoL, plus I really don't like Superjoint that much. Playing a different type music is always a challenge which would be fun. And too its Britney Spears and well being the drummer I'd be in the back more then likely meaning I could stare at that fine piece of ass the whole show, then have a reason if I were to fuck up, plus being on that tour and in her band might give me a better chance of hitting it...LoL

7. Are you still going to U of L ?, what are you majoring in, and when will you grad ?

Yes still at U of L, I'm majoring in Computer Information Systems, hahahahaha graduate what's that? Actually I take my time cause doing all that I do is no fun at all and I'd rather pass then fail so I only take a few classes at a time plus hell UPS pays for it all so I'm all good.

8. Which is worth more, your drum kit or the car you drive ?

Both were expensive I play a DW collectors series kit that ran about 6 grand and I drive a 2002 Honda Civic which of course I'm still paying on that was 16 grand.

9. Is there any girls that you would like to date in the 502 scene ? If so, name them.

Not that I can really think of right off. Honestly I don't really know too many of them because I'm not always out and about where they all are. But lets just say that I'm getting mine so its all good in the hood my brotha.

10. What band would you most want to join as a full-time member ?

That is a hard one so many that would be great, does Snoop Dogg count? hahah j/k

11. What is the most money you have made for a single gig ?

Shit that's another hard one, well me personally haven't made a whole lot because it always goes back into a band fund. As a band I'd probably have to say back in 98 when I played for FLAW, of course we always packed the Toy Tiger and usually came out of there with a Grand or more so that was probably the most by far.

12. What drummer has had the biggest influence in your playing ?

I Would have to be by far Neil Peart and Danny Carey and well my dad who gave up drumming several years back and now plays fiddle playing bluegrass music.

13. What person in your life has had the biggest influence on you as a person ?

By far my parents I can't just name one of them. They are the greatest people in the world, and probably some of the kewlest if it weren't for them I probably wouldn't be the person that I am today. Anyone that knows them know what I mean.

14. These hair bands need a drummer. I will list the band and the pay per week and you tell me if you would take the gig.
1.) Warrant - 300.00 per week and you have to wear a wig to look like Steven Sweet.Ummm NO.
2.) Cinderella - 300 per week and you have to wear spandex pants. Yeah I'd do this because I use to really dig these guys when I was a kid back in the 80's, the pants wouldn't matter I'm behind a drum kit plus I could show off this big bulge bahahaha.
3.) Poison - 350 per week and you have to wear lipstick and a hat or wig. No way
4.) Bon Jovi - 200 per week and no smoking, no drinking on tour. No thanks
5.) GNR - 500 per week, Axl will never speak to you and he is the only original member in the band. Might think about it never was into GnR much might do it just for the cash.

15. What local band or musician takes themselves too seriously ?

Please don't make me answer this would hate to piss people off so we'll just leave it at that.

16. Has a woman ever done you really wrong ? If so, please tell who, how, and all the details.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA that's the story of my life usually with em, so for now I just decide to stay a single man and do what I wanna do. We don't need to get into any details about this either cause we'd be here for a long ass time.

17. What person in the 502 scene do you have the most respect for and why ?

Probably the guys I played in Factor 9 with. I just played with those guys for YEARS and Joey and Scott and like my big brothers no to mention great musicians I just have much respect for these guys always will.

18. Rate the following people, based on talent, on a scale of 1-10. 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest.
1.) Phil Anselmo -1
2.) Danny Carey -10
3.) Stewart Copeland -8
4.) Neil Peart -10
5.) Prince -1
6.) Chris Farley -8
7.) Britney Spears -10 because of that boday only....lol
8.) Justin Timberlake -5
9. ) Tommy Lee -8
10.) Vanilla Ice -3

19. Who is the most famous person that you have met and how did it happen ?

That I really couldn't tell ya would have to be people from signed bands HA I was in Flaw does that count?....lol

20. What local musician should be famous based on talent and personality ?

Way too many to name, I wish them all the very best of luck.

Thanks for being the first to volunteer and good luck !

Thank you this was actually pretty fun, sorry it took me so long to get to it.

Let's recap...

Dave has worked 3rd shift for UPS for the past 6 years. He is still taking classes at U of L and has played drums for Factor 9, Engrind, and Flaw.

Dave has an expensive DW drum kit, AND an expensive car ('02 Honda Civic).

Has been done wrong by more than one woman, but doesn't care to go into detail or name "names".

Can't think of any girl in the 502 in particular, that he wants to go out with, but thinks Britney Spears is a 10.

Even though he didn't want to say what local bands or musicians take themselves too seriously, and didn't get into the details of how some girl screwed him over, he did a great job with the interview.

All young, local musicians should take a lesson from Dave : You can go to college, work a decent job and drive an expensive car ('02 Honda Civic) AND still have time to play in some of the best bands in town.

Thanks Dave !
I give Dave 5 out of 5 stars for his 20 Question interview. êêêêê
